How to hold your breath longer underwater

Swimming can be more fun if you can breathe well underwater. While holding your breath for a while may seem easy, there are special methods that can help you hold your breath longer and more comfortably. And, best of all, this practice doesn’t take a lot of time.

To start, let’s check your current ability to hold your breath. First, get a stopwatch. Then you will need to sit in a chair or lie down on your bed. Breathe slowly for 2 minutes at your normal pace. Then take a deep breath and exhale as much as you can. Then, hold your breath and simultaneously start the stopwatch.

When you can’t hold it any longer — breathe and allow yourself to recover.

Check your results:

If you can hold your breath for at least one minute and 30 seconds — after training, you should be able to hold it for about 4 minutes.

So the more time you get now, the more you can hold in the future.

Relaxation is the key

The core training is very simple and can be done anywhere, anytime.

Sit down, relax and breathe 3 times;
First, inhale air to fill 75% of the lungs;
Then exhale as much as you can;
Inhale again, fill your lungs 100% — as much as you can;
Hold as long as possible.

Before going underwater

Before you decide to swim and hold your breath under water, you will need to warm up your lungs.

Stand in a relaxed position;
Breathe normally for about two minutes and hold until you feel a little uncomfortable;
Then exhale and breathe normally for another two minutes;

some useful tips

If you’re still floating on top of the water, you’ll be able to hold your breath much longer than if you start actively swimming;
The closer you are to the surface, the easier it is to hold your breath. As you sink into the water, you may find it difficult to hold it for a long time;
Make sure you don’t eat anything for two to three hours before you plan your breathing exercises. Especially if you decide to practice underwater. When your body is digesting, it consumes some of the oxygen you need;
