How the career of ballet genius Mikhail Baryshnikov, whose life is as hectic as Niagara Falls, came to be

Mikhail Baryshnikov is considered the greatest genius in the world of ballet. He was friends with Joseph Brodsky, dated the “King Kong girl”, Jessica Lange, had an affair with Liza Minnelli and Princess Diana, who had admired him since her youth, got an autograph from him. Baryshnikov stood out not only in ballet, but also in cinema, even being nominated for an Oscar for his performances in some films. Your partner in “Sex and the City”Sarah Jessica Parker, called Baryshnikov “a tough guy”.

We, from awesome.club, we are among the admirers of this master’s talent and cannot imagine what modern ballet would be like without him.

Mikhail Baryshnikov’s childhood passed in the city of Riga (Latvia), in a large communal apartment. He once said that there was, in the place, “a bathroom with a bathtub that never had hot water”.

Parents of the future dancer were not part of the art world. “My father is a lieutenant colonel (Mikhail had a very tense relationship with him) and my mother worked as an accountant”. It was the mother who sowed a love of art in the future dancer, despite the fact that he independently enrolled in a ballet school when he was only 9 years old.

When Mikhail was only 12 years old, his mother’s life was tragically cut short and he had to go live with a classmate’s family for several days.

“Mother was a very simple and intuitive person. She admired all types of art. She was the one who introduced me to many things.”

While studying at the ballet school, the young man dreamed of becoming a soloist. However, a teacher said he was not tall enough to earn the position. Due to this, he tortured himself daily with the most difficult exercises that made his joints so ache that it was impossible to fall asleep. As a result, he managed to gain three to four centimeters.

For several years he studied at the Riga Ballet School with Juris Kapralis. Then he was invited to transfer to the famous choreographic school named Vagánova, which is still in Leningrad today. Parting with his beloved teacher brought Mikhail to tears. However, they stayed in touch throughout their lives — Juris passed away in 2008.

The young dancer performed on the best theater stages in his country and the public’s love and recognition were limitless. In 1973 he was allowed to hold his own creative evening. At that time, the genius was only 25 years old. The concert program, which he prepared himself, turned out to be quite progressive and modern, and many did not like it. “He was looking for choreography in which he could express himself, speak for himself. It was a new ballet that no one had seen before,” said ballerina Ilze Liepa.

Soon the artist realized that he felt restricted to regional ballet and went to try to make his fortune in New York. He first appeared to American audiences in 1974 in the ballet “Giselle”. After the end of the performance, it was possible to hear the enthusiastic screams of the audience: “Misha! Misha!” The curtain was raised 24 times.

During the two years he lived abroad, Baryshnikov took part in 26 new shows, unlike what he did during the seven years at the Kirov Theater, where he took part in no more than 15 shows.

Princess Diana dreamed of dancing with Baryshnikov. In her youth, she even waited for the artist at the exit of the London theater to get his autograph. However, Lady Di was disappointed: he signed, but did not even look at her. A few years later, Mikhail himself asked Diana for an autograph.

“A different life began for Baryshnikov, thanks to which he is known to this day, not only as a brilliant soloist of classical ballet, but as one of the reformers of all modern choreographic art.”

In 1976, he met actress Jessica Lange. Baryshnikov recalled: “We met at the comedian Buck Henry’s party; who introduced us was Milos Forman. I remember asking Milos, ‘Who is she?’ He replied: ‘The girl from King Kong’. It was love at first sight”. Lange later admitted that that night confused Baryshnikov with Nureyev: “Until that moment I knew nothing about the world of ballet and had no idea how great Baryshnikov’s fame was.”

They began to live together almost immediately after meeting, but they never legalized their relationship. In 1981, the couple had a daughter, Alexandra, who, incidentally, followed in her father’s footsteps.

To say that the relationship between Baryshnikov and Lange was “a cloudless sky” would be a lie. At that time, Baryshnikov was having an affair with Liza Minnelli. She was so crazy about him that every night after her shows in New York, she took an overnight flight to Washington just to meet him. Well, Jessica herself, six months after the birth of her daughter, Alexandra, with Mikhail, met actor and playwright Sam Shepard, who later became the reason for breaking ties with the dancer.

Baryshnikov later admitted: “I regret that our relationship did not develop as planned. I will carry this great regret with me all my life. She will remain one of the few women I’ve truly loved. But now we are good friends. And our relationship is much better than before.”

After splitting with Jessica, Baryshnikov began dating ballerina Lisa Reinhart, whom he later married. This union resulted in three children: Peter, Anna and Sofia. The couple has been together for over 30 years.

One of Baryshnikov’s best friends was the poet Joseph Brodsky. They met in New York while visiting mutual friends. The dancer recalled their first meeting: “He imposed a condition: instead of calling me Misha, he would call me Mouse (rat in Portuguese) and, for him, he chose a nickname that made a counterpoint to my ‘José, the cat ‘ and immediately added: ‘Meow!’. From then on we referred to each other that way until the last day of our friendship.”

In 1988 they opened the restaurant “Russian samovar”, in New York. The dancer invested in him the resources of his performances, and the poet, part of the resources of the Nobel Prize in Literature. According to the memoirs of regulars, Brodsky loved to sing Russian songs to the accompaniment of Mikhail when they were in the establishment.

The poet always presented his collections to his dear friend and even dedicated several poems to him. Their friendship lasted more than 20 years. On January 27, 1996, Brodsky congratulated Baryshnikov on his birthday over the phone and died the next day.

In 1977, Baryshnikov made his debut in American cinema. He played a dancer in the movie “Moment of Decision” (The Turning Point) and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 1985, he starred in the box office hit “The Midnight Sun” (White Nights)🇧🇷

The dancing star has also made appearances on Broadway, appearing in the 1989 play based on the Franz Kafka novel “The Metamorphosis”. (The Metamorphosis). During one of his interviews, Baryshnikov admitted that he was trying something new because he was afraid of getting bored: “I don’t miss anything, because I am constantly looking for different things. I want to give myself the opportunity to wake up and look for a pleasant emotion again.”

Baryshnikov gained great popularity after the release of the TV series “Sex and the City” (2003-2004), in which he brilliantly played the role of artist Alexander Petrovsky, Carrie Bradshaw’s lover.

In one of his interviews, he admitted that, on the streets, fans of the sitcom approach him more often than admirers of his other activity: “People still want to discuss it. The irony is that I’ve worked in theater for over 40 years and everyone remembers me most for my performance on the show.🇧🇷

His series partner Sarah Jessica Parker said: “It was a great honor for us that he agreed to star in our project. Overall, I consider it a tough boy (‘tough guy’)🇧🇷

“Later, I was offered roles in many films, but I turned them down because they were all stupid.”

Over the years, Baryshnikov moved away from traditional ballet and increasingly brought performances in a contemporary style to audiences. For example, in 1998, he showed an unusual dance to The Heartbeat🇧🇷 Sensors were placed on his body and amplifiers transmitted sounds to the audience: in this way the artist danced to the rhythm of his own heartbeat.

By the way, in 2019, on the Russian TV quiz show “What? Where? When?”, the following question was asked: “In 1998, dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov ordered a small device specifically for the performance of a new solo number. What was the device used in this number and what was the peculiarity of the dance?” However, all participants gave wrong answers, and no one won the round.

In 2015, in his native Riga, he performed in the solo show “Brodsky/Baryshnikov”, in which he read the poems of his friend Joseph Brodsky. It was impossible to get tickets, as the entire local elite had gathered for the performance.

“I only realized it when there were no more places even in the hall. I called the organizers and they told me that the cost of a ticket was 800 euros! Social networks helped: I saw a post from an acquaintance who offered two tickets at a reasonable price. During the performance, it felt like you were wrapped in a blanket, the energy was so hot.”

Today, Baryshnikov directs the Center for the Arts, in New York. The venue opened in 2005 and is dedicated to spreading talent and creativity.
