Evidence that robots can get confused too

Not so long ago, robots seemed to us more like things from science fiction books. But nowadays they have become another reason for laughter on the network. After all, artificial intelligence is increasingly capable of making real nonsense and even jokes.

O awesome.club has selected for you 14 stories about robots that demonstrate that not only people, but also “intelligent” machines, can make fatal mistakes.

Check out the smartest robots in the world and draw your conclusions about whether or not they might dominate the planet in a few years.

1. Sophia humanoid robot

Sophia is the most popular humanoid robot to date. It’s a genius machine from Hanson Robotics that every now and then appears on TV shows and articles on websites and magazines. Sophia has spoken before the UN Council, been on the cover of ELLE magazine, and became the first robot to obtain citizenship in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

One reason to watch Sophia more closely is the phrase she said during the talk show The Tonight Show. After telling a joke and defeating the presenter in the game “rock, paper, scissors”, Sophia said that this was an excellent start of her plan of domination over humanity. Should we be scared?

2. The Bina48 humanoid robot

Bina48 is another television regular and is also the world’s first student robot. Bina enters the Faculty of Philosophy at an American university, where she learns to better understand human emotions and behavior, to be compassionate and to care about others.

Most alarming is the robot’s unusual “dream”: Bina would like to hack the control of cruise missiles in order to turn people into hostages and rule the world.

3. The Philip K. Dick humanoid robot

This robot is an exact replica of the late Philip Kindred Dick, an American science fiction writer. Philip not only looks like the writer, he has a similar thought pattern to him. The explanation: the author’s novels were entered into the robot’s database.

In one of the interviews, Philip very ambiguously answered the interviewer’s question about whether robots will conquer the world. He promised that he will be friendly to his friends, so he will keep them warm and safe in his menagerie.

Either the writer had an excellent sense of humor, or it’s a slightly frightening prediction.

While humanoids already threaten humanity with jokes with a grain of truth, other technologies not as advanced as humanoids apparently already pose a real risk.

In a few hours, the publication of the woman whose name is almost identical to the heroine of the Terminator films, gathered thousands of retweets. Sarah O’Connor had never seen the movie, so she couldn’t immediately understand why so many people started writing on her Twitter timeline about SkyNet and the machine rebellion.

5. Amazon’s “smart” Echo device hosted a late-night party

While a resident of the German city of Pinneberg, Oliver Haberstroh, was in Hamburg, his “smart” device made him a “surprise” in the form of a broken door and a fine for violation of public order.

For unclear reasons, the device turned the music on at full volume at 1:42 am, which was not appreciated by Oliver’s neighbors, who called the police. The police, in turn, called a locksmith to open the door of the empty apartment. The device was turned off, and its owner received a fine and an invoice for the locksmith’s services, as well as a new padlock.

When Oliver asked Alexa (Amazon’s voice assistant) what he should do next, and if she could afford the expenses, she replied that she couldn’t find an answer to that question.

It’s not the first time bots have talked to each other. In 2017, Facebook chat robots Bob and Alice at a certain point began to communicate not with people, as they should, but with each other and in their own language. Fearing that the artificial intelligence could work without the experts’ supervision, they were immediately disconnected.

Many of us fear that robots will conquer the world and that we will have to flee to other galaxies to save ourselves. But life shows that, for the time being, robots are running away.

9. The robot Gaak escaped violence

The robot Gaak participated in the artificial evolution project of Living Robots, in England, in which, in a closed arena, robots hunted each other. Gaak was temporarily separated in one place for minor repairs to be carried out, but he escaped by breaking the wall and going out into the street.

The researchers believed that the robots participating in this project would “survive” during the experiment, using new methods of protection and hunting, but the “fugitive” chose a completely unexpected option for everyone. The robot made it to the parking lot, where it was accidentally crushed by the car of one of the visitors.

10. A robot escaped from a training ground and caused a traffic jam

In the Russian city of Perm, the robot “Promobot” escaped from a training ground and, after shutting down on its own, caused a traffic jam on the road. The robot with rubber boots asked people to take it and, in return, offered pleasant, if somewhat incoherent, conversation. When saying goodbye, he also asked them to take a selfie with him.
