Elizabeth Taylor was a young actress known for her unique beauty.
Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor was born in 1932. She started out in Hollywood as a child star before moving on to more mature roles in the 1950s, starring in romantic films.
She became the highest-paid movie star during the 1960s. The actress is also a multi-award winner, with three Oscars and four Golden Globes under her belt.
Taylor was considered the most beautiful woman in the world during her heyday, and was reportedly described as a “building miracle”.
Her gorgeous hair, hourglass-shaped body, rare violet eyes, and two rows of eyelashes (due to a genetic mutation) made her so eccentric that some researchers analyzed her features.
She thought her roles made her wish she were an adult, leading to a series of marriages.
Taylor said her image made her want to be a real woman and wife. She saw marriage as a way to live an independent adult life, and also admitted to being a “hopeless romantic”.
She got married for the first time at 18, and it was a quick affair.
Her first husband was Conrad ‘Nicky’ Hilton Jr., and they were together for only 8 months — from May 1950 to January 1951. Hilton was the son of hotelier Conrad Hilton.
According to reports, the two broke up because of Hilton’s bad habits.
She became a mother in her second marriage.
Taylor attempted a second marriage in February 1952. She said “I do” to British actor Michael Wilding, 20 years her senior.
This union produced 2 children, Michael Jr. and Christopher. In an article, Christopher said that when they were kids, Taylor allowed them to play with his Golden Globe trophies, but not his Oscars.
As Taylor’s career exploded, her relationship with Wilding was strained. So after 5 years of marriage they went their separate ways.
The third time was a “jewel”, literally, because she was bestowed with gifts and luxury jewelry.
Just a month after splitting from Wilding, Taylor walked down the aisle again with her third husband, entertainment producer Mike Todd. The couple had a daughter named Liza.
Todd apparently spoiled his wife with fancy gifts, from special meals flying to Paris to installing an entire display case in her garden.
Sadly, their relationship came to an abrupt end when Todd was killed in a plane crash in 1958.
Her fourth marriage was controversial, but she hasn’t spoken out about it.
Her marriage to singer Eddie Fisher in 1959 made some headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Fisher was still married to actress Debbie Reynolds at that point, but he left her to marry Taylor, which ended up having negative repercussions for both of them.
Taylor announced that their honeymoon would last 40 years, but 5 years after the “I do” they were already over.
Her turbulent relationship with her fifth (and sixth) husband hit Hollywood like a storm.
Taylor fell in love with actor Richard Burton on the set of Cleopatra. It was a whirlwind romance, and the two were married the same month that Taylor divorced Fisher (in March 1964).
This relationship was marked by being extremely passionate, and they were notified by certain institutions for their inappropriate behavior.
After starring in a TV drama about divorce, Burton and Taylor ended their 10-year marriage in 1974. But that didn’t last long, and after 16 months (October 1975) they were remarried.
She said that she loved Burton madly and that she would never marry anyone else. But the second marriage lasted less than a year, and she ended up taking vows with another man.
Even though her last 2 marriages didn’t work out, she remained good friends with both ex-husbands.
Taylor’s sixth husband was politician John Warner. They bonded over their shared love of horses, but after nearly 6 years, they too got divorced.
The last man the actress married was construction worker Larry Fortensky, 20 years her junior. But unlike Taylor, Fortensky wasn’t used to the spotlight and ended up breaking up in 1996.
Taylor kept in touch with Warner and Fortensky for the rest of his life.
Coming out of her marriages, Elizabeth Taylor lived her remaining years with purpose.
Even in her later years, Taylor continued to act on television and on stage. She had her own line of perfumes and jewelry, and also created a foundation that aimed to find a cure for HIV/AIDS.
The actress was honored by Queen Elizabeth for her charitable actions, and was also named a Dame Commander with music star Julie Andrews.
Taylor passed away in 2011 from heart disease. Earlier, she wrote that “she was destined to be a lover, a mother, a wife and a friend” — and that’s exactly how she lived.
