Dutch city plants flowers over 320 bus stops to help save bees

The Netherlands is a country known for being always innovating in the development of projects aimed at combating climate change. And we, from awesome.club, we have already published a post explaining the importance of the presence of bees on our planet. This time we want to tell you how the Dutch city of Utrecht turned 320 bus stops into rest areas not only for bees but also for other insects. The stops were covered with plants, in order to take care of biodiversity and improve air quality.

O awesome.club is a huge enthusiast of environmental conservation, keeping readers always up to date on projects that help make Earth a better place to live. As it couldn’t be otherwise, we share with you the details of this beautiful initiative.

The importance of bees

Bees play a very important role in the environment. In addition to producing honey, they are responsible for the pollination process of flowers, ensuring food for mammals and insects. They also help in agriculture, as they improve food production and contribute to the growth of green areas. For these and other reasons, it is essential to take care of and guarantee the necessary conditions for the reproduction of bees. Without them, the world cannot sustain itself.

rest areas

In the Dutch city of Utrecht, the roofs of 320 common bus stops were covered with grass and wild plants to create resting areas for bees. This measure helps the insects in their reproduction process, as the structures also store rainwater and capture fine dust particles. The stops are equipped with energy-efficient LED lights and bamboo benches. In addition, 96 of them have solar energy panels, powering the integrated digital screens.

A team of employees is in charge of keeping the bus stops in full working order for the bees, using electric cars to get from one stop to another. So everything that involves the project is sustainable. In addition to this initiative, the city facilitates financing for residents who wish to build areas for bees in their homes, renovating the roofs of their homes.

The next step is a hotel for bees

But the project does not stop there: by the end of 2019, an advertising billboard adapted for bees will be installed, which will become the largest “hotel” in the world dedicated to these insects. The initiative is part of Utrecht’s goal to be a fully environmentally friendly city by the year 2050.

What do you think of the measures adopted by the Dutch city in favor of bees? Would you like to see a similar project implemented in your city? What problems involving the environment affect the place where you live? Comment!
