Cameron Herrin’s accident is revisited as fans demand justice

“Justice for Cameron Herrin” was trending on TikTok and Twitter after fans learned the social media star had been sentenced to 24 years in prison following the 2018 accident.

Several users shared Cameron’s clip from his April hearing. It’s unclear how the internet got hold of the footage, but the short clips were enough to get people talking and it didn’t take long for the topic to become trending. However, there were mixed reactions to it.

Who is Cameron Mistress?

Cameron was a social media personality who often posted pictures and videos on TikTok and Instagram. The young star had thousands of followers on the app and often showed them a glimpse into his life.

Besides posting random content, Cameron was also known for street racing. He has often uploaded videos of himself racing while showing people his daring side.

In 2018, Cameron was arrested after being involved in an accident that killed two people.

The accident from 2018 picked up again

In 2018, Cameron and his friend John Barrineau were racing on Tampa Street off Bayshore Boulevard. During their outing, the duo were involved in an accident that killed 24-year-old Jessica Reisinger and her 21-month-old daughter Lillia in a stroller.

First, Cameron pleaded not guilty. However, he later changed his statement. According to WTSP, he decided to enter an “open plea” while accepting his mistake. On the other hand, John pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicle murder and one misdemeanor charge. For this he received six years in state prison, followed by 15 years of probation.

At the same time, John’s license was suspended for five years and he was asked to do 200 hours of community service. A decision for Cameron was not made until April 2021.

During the hearing, Cameron was found guilty of two counts of vehicular homicide. The judge sentenced him to nine years in Florida State Penitentiary in the first case and 15 years in the second case.

Hillsborough Circuit Judge Christopher Nash said: “There is really nothing the court can do to remedy the damage done to the victims in this case.”

Justice for Cameron trends on social media

Although Cameron was sentenced in April, people got wind of the case after a couple of TikTok videos in which clips from his hearing went viral. The video was first uploaded by a user who goes by the name “3hki”.

Since then, the videos have been viewed millions of times. At the same time, the hashtags “Cameron Herrin” and “Just for Cameron Herrin” were viewed millions of times on TikTok.

While there are several people who support Cameron, there are others who wholeheartedly support the ruling. One user wrote: “24 years of actually killing him will make you a fake teenager who felt guilty and confessed to a hopeless criminal!”

Another added: “Getting 24 years for the unintentional horrific and tragic incident is not fair… We stand by Mistress because we are human and we all make mistakes regardless of our race, religion or language. Clemency for Cameron.”

Meanwhile, others argued: “It wasn’t an accident. It’s a crime. He accelerates the car. He also broke the rules. He also raced cars. It’s a crime.” Another user echoed similar thoughts as the comment read, “They say he deserves a second chance but the people who died didn’t have a second chance.”

As of now, there are no new updates on Cameron’s case.
