Brazilian has been embroidering 151 Pokémons for more than 500 days and the result is beautiful

Many people know the benefits of dedicating themselves to handicrafts. The regular practice of these activities helps, for example, to maintain mental and hand health, in addition to stimulating attention to detail. And what about when it is possible to combine manual talents with a passion for beloved childhood characters? The result has everything to work out, don’t you think? It was November 2018 when publicist Julia Tumminelli, now 24 years old, announced in her profiles on twitter and on Instagram that she was starting a project that would require a lot of dedication: cross-stitching each of the 151 Pokémon from Generation I, presented in 1996 inside a Game Boy game.

Julia, who has always been attracted to big challenges, has been fond of Japanese animation since she was a child. Characters from the Pokémon saga, in particular, are among her favorites. A resident of Rio de Janeiro, the young woman not only watched the cartoon on TV, but also had fun with the friendly creatures in video games and card games.

And it was during a conversation about this passion that Julia’s boyfriend suggested the topic of her next project. “I clearly remember him saying: ‘Your new project could be to embroider Gameboy Pokémon’”, recalls the publicist.

Julia learned to do cross stitch and embroidery from her grandmother when she was only 6 years old. When she started high school, she took a break from handicrafts, but picked up the production groove in 2016, and has never stopped. Today she even teaches embroidery!

“Embroidery is the only thing that really calms me down, helping a lot to work on my anxiety”, she says. For the artist, recognition for the work developed is another great benefit provided by the practice. “It’s really amazing when someone tells me they started embroidering because of me, or when I see my students taking it forward with so much love. It’s the best thing in the world,” she opines.

Julia is very close to reaching her goal of portraying the 151 Pokémons in cross stitch: by the time this post was written, she had already completed 109 creatures, in a process that has taken more than 500 days!

For people who are thinking of venturing into the world of embroidery, Julia gives important tips: starting with small and simple designs is one of them. Still according to her, drawing on the fabric beforehand helps a lot, and it is possible to work with any thread you have at home. “And most importantly: HAVE PATIENCE”, she points out.

You can even imagine the work that Julia has been having to complete her mission, but one thing is certain: the result is looking beautiful!
