Recent research has concluded that taking a hot shower before bed can help improve sleep quality. Apparently, the Japanese have known this for many years. But they don’t just do this to sleep better – there are some other reasons that explain this behavior.
O awesome.club became interested in this story and decided to research a little more about this habit. Check out what we found.
The Japanese bath includes a long ritual
When taking a bath, the Japanese follow a special ritual divided into several stages. First, they get under the shower to wash away sweat and dirt from their bodies. After that, they take a long bath to relax their body and clean and tone their skin. Some add green tea or other herbs to the water, making the process even more effective. The Japanese also carefully measure the water temperature, always thinking about their own comfort and never exceeding 40 °C, as too hot water can dry out and harm the skin.
They follow old family habits
As in the rest of the world, taking a shower in the morning is a recent luxury in Japan, as until the 19th century there was no hot water, heating or indoor plumbing in homes. That is, people had to boil water to take a hot bath, a process that takes longer. Thus, the lack of time in the morning made people get used to taking a hot shower at night, a habit that remains until today.
They frequent public baths and hot springs
Public baths and hot springs are very popular in Japan. These places are frequented by people of different ages and their main objectives are to relax and do something pleasant. It’s kind of entertainment for some people. During the night, the places are emptier, perfect for those who want to be alone with their own thoughts.
They don’t have much time in the morning
Many people say that the Japanese work a lot. There are those who say they are workaholics (workaholics). About 4.5 million workers in Japan have a second job; on average, they work 6 to 14 hours a week in addition to the hours required for a full-time job. Furthermore, Japan is known to be an extremely punctual country. As delays are received very negatively, in order not to waste time in the morning, they prefer to leave the bath for the night.
They feel the effects of the weather a lot.
Summer in Japan is hot and humid and most people don’t use cars. That is, people use public transport every day and when they get home after work they feel a great need to take a shower.
In winter, on the other hand, Japanese homes get very cold, as most do not have central heating. Therefore, people take baths at night as well to keep warm.
