Mathilde Kschessinska

Mathilde was the leading dancer of the Mariinsky Theater in Russia, but today her name is famous not only for that. A century later, people talk about her romance with Nikolai Alexandrovich, then future and last Russian Emperor.

It is believed that she was the one who poisoned Barbara after she became queen. After his wife’s death, Sigismund II was inconsolable and never spoke to his mother again.

A legend is associated with the name of Barbara Radziwiłł. It is said that her spirit still roams Nesvizhsky Castle, where Sigismund held a séance in order, at least for a moment, to see his beloved again. Barbara stayed at the castle, but told her husband that he too would have to die at Nesvizhsky, that way they could be together.

But Sigismund died at Knyszyn, and now the lovers’ spirits are forever parted.
