9 Celebrities Who Turned Down Roles That Became Movie Classics

Many films would have been different if the cast had other actors as protagonists. Some celebrities have turned down signature roles for reasons such as conflicting filming schedules or just a lack of interest. Had they known of the character’s future success, many actors probably would never have turned down these roles.

But, rightly or wrongly, it’s fun to imagine some of these famous movies with different stars and stars than those who played certain roles.

1. Sean Connery as Gandalf and Morpheus

Sean Connery turned down 2 roles that have become classics in film history: Morpheus in matrix and Gandalf of Lord of the Rings.

Connery rejected these job offers because he didn’t understand the scripts.

2. Emma Watson as Mia

Young actress Emma Watson turned down the role in the film La La Land: Singing Seasons, because of another production that I was participating in, Beauty and the Beast (2017). Luckily we got to see Emma again next to Ryan Gosling.

3. Nicolas Cage as “The Ram” Robinson

Nic Cage turned down the lead role in The fighter, why he didn’t agree to take steroids for the film, which turned out to be a vital part of Mickey Rourke’s performance. That actor went home with a Golden Globe and best actor nomination that year. And it was well deserved!

Speaking of Kate Winslet, in a twist of characters and storylines, the actress turned down a role in Shakespeare in Love (1998), to focus his attention on independent films.

But she participated in the film based on the work of Shakespeare, Hamlet. How ironic!

6. Julia Roberts as Leigh Anne Tuohy

Sandra Bullock received the Academy Award for Best Actress in the film A possible dream (2009), a role previously offered to superstar Julia Roberts. Julia turned down the role and missed out on becoming the highest-paid actress of the year.

7. Sandra Bullock as Maggie Fitzgerald

Alright, Sandra got her recognition later, but before the movie A possible dream she was invited to the main role in the production of Clint Eastwood Golden girl (2004). Again an Oscar-winning performance. The reason? Filming clashed with production Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Powerful🇧🇷

8. Michelle Pfeiffer as Clarice Sterling

Along with Anthony Hopkins starring as the cannibal Hannibal Lecter, Jodie Foster shined in her role as Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs (1991), a character that Michelle Pfeiffer rejected. Something very difficult to imagine, isn’t it?

9. John Travolta as Forrest Gump
