8+ Washing mistakes that can make a washing machine stop working

The washing machine is one of the most essential household electrical appliances. Because it is complex, it requires careful handling and maintenance, not least because, if something goes wrong, you will have a tremendous headache. It turns out that, most of the time, we ourselves are responsible for its malfunction or complete breakdown. After all, not following the instructions and rules for use reduces the life of household appliances.

We, from incredible.club, we already wrote a post about how improper washing spoils clothes. And now let’s show what harms the washing machine itself. We hope our readers will follow all instructions and use their washers with care so they will keep working for years to come. And in the bonus we will tell you how long the washed clothes can stay in the drum.

Putting too much washing powder

Many people believe that the more washing powder, the cleaner the clothes will be. But in reality, that’s not how it works and even the product manufacturers themselves warn about it. Using too much washing powder, especially on front-loading machines, can cause malfunctions as excess suds can block the drain system.

In addition, excess soap can clog the dispenser (the drawer where soap and fabric softener are poured), and this will not allow for a good wash of clothes.

Not cleaning the filter often

The washing machine filter has an important function. It is he who collects from the drum what should not be there: coins, hair, rubber bands and other little things. The filter should be cleaned four times a year. But cleaning can be done more frequently if you feel an unpleasant odor or notice that the machine is not washing properly.

Cramming the washer with clothes

Even if there is a pile of dirty clothes in the hamper, you shouldn’t overload the washing machine. First, it makes washing inefficient. Second, overloading the machine can cause the machine’s bearings or dampers to fail. However, it is also a waste to wash too few items.

The rule of thumb when it comes to washing is as follows:

Install the machine incorrectly

Sometimes it’s not our daily habits that result in a breakdown, but how the machine itself was installed. The drum rotates strongly during spinning and if the washer is installed incorrectly, it can jump and even move out of place.

These are the most common reasons why the machine moves during operation:

washer shipping bolts not removed; the machine is installed on an uneven floor; faulty shock absorbers or bearings.

Using products not intended for washing machines

Rarely clean the machine

When the machine starts to smell bad, many people have the habit of just pouring more soap in the washes or not leaving the clothes inside the washer for a long time. But the unpleasant smell from the drum is simply the result of the device being neglected. In addition to cleaning the filter, the machine also needs its own maintenance: once a month, the self-cleaning function should be performed. If there is no such function, you can program a wash cycle without laundry at a high temperature and with a little vinegar.

Generally, mold forms quickly in a warm, humid environment. Therefore, when the machine is not working, if possible, leave its lid ajar. It is also necessary to periodically remove and dry the soap and fabric softener dispenser.

Not “softening” the water

It’s no news that tap water isn’t the best. That’s why many people use filters or drink gallon water. In the same way that we are careful when choosing the water we drink, we also have to pay attention to the quality of the water used in the machines. Hard water (when there is an excess of dissolved salts) reduces the quality of the wash and can cause limescale incrustations. To understand the level of water hardness, conduct a small test.

You will need liquid soap, water and a clear bottle. Fill the bottle one-third full with tap water. Add a few drops of liquid soap, close the cap and shake the bottle vigorously. If the water is cloudy, milky, and there are no bubbles, it is probably hard water. If the water remains clear and forms foam on its surface, then it is soft (or soft) water. If the water hardness is not good for washing, it is advisable to use more soap.

Bonus: you can leave your laundry in the machine for up to 12 hours

Sometimes it happens that we have to change our plans because of the laundry: the machine cycle ends in ten minutes and it would be a shame to leave the house without hanging out the clothes. However, some experts have found that leaving clothes inside the washer for 8 to 12 hours isn’t too bad.

According to experts, if you always keep the machine clean, regularly wash the drum and keep the lid open, the unpleasant smell will not appear so quickly.
