7 Typical Characteristics of Chinese Houses That Differentiate Them from Western ones

China is a country with admirable customs and traditions. For many Westerners, this Asian giant is still a real mystery. But what is everyday life like at the home of a Chinese family? Well, there are a number of quirks. For example, the Chinese don’t usually share a room. In addition, you will hardly find a family that has a meal in the kitchen. And rice cookers are a real craze.

we, from awesome.club, we talked to a woman who moved to China and we are ready to share with you what are the main peculiarities of this country in relation to the daily life of the house. Follow up!

You will hardly find bathtubs in China’s bathrooms.

Those who love a relaxing soak in a bathtub may be in for an unpleasant surprise in China: this item is usually found only in luxury hotels. The most common, in apartments and houses in the country, is that the bathroom has only a common shower, the kind we are used to using in Brazil.

And meals in the kitchen are also a rare thing in the country.

Unlike kitchens in the West, where people usually have breakfast, sit down for a snack and even welcome guests for coffee, in China this room is used only for its basic function: cooking. And that’s why, over there, the kitchen is, above all, considered a workspace and is not usually large. Therefore, it usually does not have a space for the table (which, most of the time, is in the dining room).

Floor covering is usually ceramic

Furniture and appliances are often covered with covers and “decorative cloths”

The old habit of covering furniture and appliances with covers, towels and decorative cloths, often associated in the West with grandmothers’ homes, is still quite common in China. There, you can find all those “decorative props” for washing machines, televisions, coffee tables and just about anything in most homes. Many online stores offer these accessories.

Kitchens do not usually have an oven. But almost all of them have a rice cooker.

If, on the one hand, it is very difficult to find ovens in the kitchens of Chinese homes, on the other hand, there is an appliance that exists in practically every home: the electric rice cooker. This device is not totally unknown in Brazil, but it is still, in general, little used here in the West. And the Chinese love this device so much that they often take it with them when traveling abroad for long periods, for example, to study or work abroad.

The design of space distribution is different

In China, people prefer smaller, but single rooms, to larger rooms, but shared between siblings. Typically, the Chinese tend to renovate large rooms to form smaller individual rooms for each family member.

It’s best not to get too attached to your property.

It is unlikely that a father in China will be able to leave a property to his son. Even more difficult is for a grandfather to bequeath a house or apartment to his grandson. After all, according to the legislation, all real estate developments belong to the State and citizens can only enjoy a dwelling for a period of 70 years. However, it is not yet known for sure what happens after that period. After all, the law was established less than 70 years ago.

The fact is that the standard is unlikely to be applied in practice. After all, the pace of construction in this Asian power is frenetic and new developments are replacing old ones at a very fast pace. In the country, it is a common practice to demolish buildings and houses that are 20, 30 years old to build more modern properties in their places – which, in turn, will also have a shorter “expiration period”.
