Most Amish live in the US state of Pennsylvania. Today, there are over 200 covered bridges in this state, while in the 19th century they numbered over 1500. Lancaster County is especially famous for them. There are 29 such bridges there and tours are even organized that pass through them🇧🇷 And all are listed as historical heritage today.
The sheer number of these bridges in the most populated Amish state is no coincidence—the local communities built them because about two centuries ago there was relatively cheap wood in the region, which was widely used in general construction, especially in their villages. However, the process of building the bridges itself was costly. And, therefore, they were covered with a roof, so that it would protect the structure from rain and prolong its useful life.🇧🇷
