It’s really bad when your work isn’t appreciated, but even worse when you’re not paid well. Not getting a raise or bonus can be overcome; another thing is when the salary is barely enough to survive.

I resigned from the company where I worked as a chemical engineer for two years. The first reason was the lack of salary increase. The second, the increase in workload: the volume of service and the number of reports increased. The icing on the cake was a conversation with the head of the department. The manager turned around and told me, “I’m going to have to deduct it from your paycheck.” I replied that it was funny, I thought I was joking, but I wasn’t. I worked in the IT department of a small company. Several times I had to go to the owner’s house to configure his computer. This soon turned into a duty: “Come in tonight, my daughter has a school project and the printer isn’t working.” Or “My child has virus-ridden his computer again, we need to clean it up.” He never paid me for these visits. I started working as a truck loader at a large retail store right out of high school. I immediately fell in love with working in this field and made it my goal to get promoted. I went through several different tests, because, only then could I have the opportunity to be considered for the position of manager. In two years I passed all the exams, in fact, I already had a managerial workload, but I didn’t receive the salary for that function. So they hired a new HR manager and told me they were no longer considering me for a managerial position, my hours were cut, my paycheck didn’t pay for gas to get to work, and my car broke down. I worked in two companies as an engineer. And it was the same story: Want a raise? Write a formal request and we’ll think about it. On the first job, they didn’t think much of it, but on the second they raised my salary by just over a dollar. Well, I realized I shouldn’t stay there, I found a new job and moved out of town. After me, four more people left to work there, including the chief engineer.
