13 Images of our world from a different angle

Our world is a myriad of wonders. Every day we are presented with new facts that we had never heard of. It is said that daily almost 75 GB of data is presented to our brain.

1. The kiss of two prairie dogs

When greeting each other, prairie dogs touch their teeth. In this way, they can determine whether the other animal belongs to their social group. Interestingly, adults in a zoo seem more affectionate and kiss more when there are more people watching.

2. The first purple carrots

The first carrots were grown in Afghanistan and Turkey and, contrary to common sense, were not orange, but purple and even yellowish. The carrots we know today were created in the Netherlands in the 17th century to show their support for the Orange-Nassau dynasty. So, could we refer to the Netherlands team as “the mechanical carrot”?

For many generations a family with blue skin lived in Kentucky, USA. They had a rare metabolic condition called methemoglobinemia. Due to the endogamy of this isolated community, several generations of people had blue skin. When the young people began to leave Kentucky, the condition became extinct.

5. The public library divided into two countries

The Haskell Free library and opera is unique as it is in the US and Canada at the same time. Most of the audience is in the United States, but the stage is in Canada. The international border that runs through the library and the opera is marked with a black line on the floor.

6. The giraffe cleans its nose with its tongue

A giraffe’s tongue measures approximately 50 cm and easily reaches the animal’s nose and ears. The giraffe has good muscle control of the tongue to pick up leaves and bring it to the mouth. To make things even more interesting, the tongue is bluish black, a way to protect it from the sun’s rays.

In early November, before nightfall, it is possible to see something very interesting in the UK sky: thousands of birds flying together. This process is called ‘murmuring’ and the main cause is security and the exchange of heat and information.

FDC Willard (short for Felis Domesticus Chester) became the co-author of a paper with its owner, Professor Jack H. Hetherington, an American physicist and mathematician, in 1975. The cat became so popular that the institute’s director Physics at the university tried to persuade Willard to join the department full-time. Well, maybe with a little more kibble or a few hoops, he could do it.

11. The biggest family in the world

The head of the largest family in the world, Ziona, is also the head of a religious sect called the ‘Chana’. He has 39 wives, 94 children and 33 grandchildren. The entire family (181 members) lives in India in a 4-storey house with 100 rooms.

12. The big blue hole

The big blue hole is the biggest in the world and is 100 km off the coast of Belize. The place was made famous by the explorer Jacques Cousteau. He claimed it was one of the 10 best places in the world to dive in 1971.

13. An infant skull before losing baby teeth

Permanent teeth are above and below baby teeth and the normal flow is for them to be replaced after they naturally fall out.
