We’ve all heard of these phenomenal hybrid mythological creatures that surpass our imagination. But did you know that hybrid animals exist in real life and are also impressive? Just look at this list! Hybrids are mostly conceived naturally, when 2 species of animals reproduce together or by a biological process called “somatic hybridization”.
we from awesome.club we’ve found some of the most fantastic hybrids that actually exist and their names are as interesting as they look.
1. Zebroid
The zebroid, also known as a zonkey or zorse, is actually a cross between a zebra and a horse or donkey. (in short, a zebra with another animal of the genus Equus). It first appeared in the 19th century, created through somatic hybridization. These animals exist to this day, but are rarely seen, because they are infertile or sterile.
2. Forquinho (Tursiops truncatus x Pseudorca crassidens)
If you haven’t guessed it by its name, a pitchfork is a cross between an orca and a female bottlenose dolphin. There are reports that these creatures exist in the wild, once they were able to reproduce naturally, and only one of them now lives in captivity in the aquarium. Sea Life Parkin Hawaii. Born in May 1985, was able to reproduce and have 3 forquinhos in 2004.
3. Beefalo
The beefalo is the successful fertile offspring of American buffalo and domestic cattle. It was scientifically created to combine the characteristics of both species for the meat production industry. The first accidental crosses of the 2 species appeared approximately 1,800 years ago, and intentional crosses soon began during the 19th century.
4. Liger
One of the best-known hybrid animals is the liger. It is a cross between a male lion and a female tiger. He has beautiful patterns of white stripes on his skin, which gradually fade into different spots. The liger weighs approximately 400 kg, which makes it the largest hybrid animal among felines. Ligers only exist in captivity, so the environment of similar species does not overlap.
5. Tigreon
Like the liger, the tiger is quite similar in its crossbreeding. Both hybrids have the same parents, just different genders. A tiger is a hybrid cross between a female lion and a male tiger. Tigers can only exist in captivity and are known to be sterile. Amazingly, in 1943, a female tiger was able to mate with a male lion at the Munich Hellabrunn Zoo, and her tiny cubs were successfully bred to adulthood.
6. Leopon
The appearance of the leopon resembles a mythological creature from Egypt. A leopon is a very rare cross between a lioness and a male leopard. Its head resembles a lion, while its body is identical to that of a leopard.🇧🇷 The first leopon was “produced” in captivity in 1910 in India, but unfortunately did not survive long. Now there are only 100 leopons in the entire world. They live in captivity, as they were born through somatic hybridization.
7. “Groll” Bear
These cuddly creatures, which resemble large stuffed animals, are descended from a grizzly bear and a polar bear. Even though they are a strange bear hybrid, they are produced in the wild, not in captivity🇧🇷 Interestingly, although these species belong to the same territories, in nature they avoid each other.
8. Mule
Mules are one of the most common hybrids that cannot be found in the wild because they are created through a reciprocal process. They are the offspring of a horse and a female donkey, smaller than horses and have a thicker coat. Due to the difference in the number of chromosomes in each species, mules they are unable to reproduce and are extremely difficult to find.
9. Savannah Cat
To all dog and cat lovers around the world: the savannah cat is often compared to dogs for its loyalty and intelligence. They tend to follow their owners around the house and can be trained like dogs. The savannah cat lives in the wild and is a cross between a domestic cat and an African wildcat.
10. Bed (animal)
These little creatures that look like little furry camels are the beds. They are a hybrid that result from a cross between a male camel and a female llama. Hybrid litters are very rare in nature, so some scientists used artificial insemination to raise their first offspring. Interestingly, the reason it was first reproduced in 1998 was to create an animal that could produce more wool than the llama.
11. Goat x sheep
This little ball of tenderness is a gele, a rare cross between a sheep and a goat. Although they have many similarities in their constitution, they are two different species and once they reproduce, their offspring are usually stillborn.🇧🇷 There were only 2 cases worldwide where an offspring was born alive, but they were sterile, due to the intermediate number of chromosomes they had.
12. Dzo
Originating in Mongolia and Tibet, the dzo or zho is a hybrid between domestic cattle and a yak. Like the dzos are products of the heterosis phenomenon, they tend to be stronger than their parents, larger and more fertile. In addition, they tend to produce greater amounts of milk and meat compared to normal cattle and yaks.
13. Jagleão
This hybrid is actually the result of a cross between a male jaguar and a female lion. It was created involuntarily; his parents used to coexist in the same zoo and became inseparable friends. This jagleon now lives with its parents at Bear Creek Wildlife Sanctuary in Ontario, Canada.
