10 Survival Movie Myths That In Real Life Can Kill You

You can build an encyclopedia about how famous heroes survived in extreme conditions, starting with Robinson Crusoe and ending with Rambo. But are all these survival methods used in the movies applicable to real situations?

O awesome.club selected the 10 best survival recipes from the world of cinema that actually don’t work in practice.

Myth 1: A cave is the right place to build a fire

It seems safe and even romantic, but… fire and heat heat the stones, which expand as the temperature rises. And that can cause the cave to collapse. It’s best to light a fire outside.

Myth 2: Freshly caught fish can be eaten raw. People eat sushi

That is, you are not satisfied with being in an emergency situation and still “want to add” an intestinal disorder to that? And still in a place without access to hospitals or pharmacies? Do not risk it, cook the fish on the fire. The same contraindications apply to the use of fresh blood from animals. Be very careful!

Myth 3: You can safely throw a hand grenade

In the real world, inside the grenade, after removing the safety pin, the precursor hits the fuse that triggers its detonator and explodes almost at the same time. By the way, a rather strong explosion: it can rip off half of the palm — which is not shown in any action movie. And that’s because there’s still a chemical delay system between the fuze and the detonator that makes the grenade explode between 3 and 4 seconds after removing the safety catch.

Myth 4: You can use a tourniquet to stop bleeding

It’s impossible. You can squeeze the tissues so tightly that as a result they will die and the limb will have to be amputated. In addition, the alteration of blood circulation, in some cases, leads to a heart attack. Try to stop the blood by taking the proper body position, squeezing the injured area.

The tourniquet is used only in case of extremely rapid blood loss, when there is a question about preserving the person’s life, and not about preserving his limbs.

Myth 5: Watching a TV show about survival in extreme conditions will prepare you for real survival

Of course it’s not like that. Do not forget that any television project is created by a team of dozens of people who always remain behind the scenes. Including doctors and rescuers, ready to immediately go to the rescue. And then there are the directors and editors, who, from the recorded images, will make a very attractive and romantic story. In fact, things are not so simple when there is a real survival situation.

Reality is harsh, prosaic and cruel: you need to survive and reach out to people, without acting in front of cameras, without photo shoots and away from comments on social networks.

Myth 6: Boiled water is 100% safe to drink

Myth 7: If you get lost, go down a river and sooner or later you will find people

“Sooner or later” are the keywords. True, due to the need for water, people often live close to rivers, but .. you can go weeks without finding a single settlement (see the map of Siberia and the Far East, for example). And, in addition, during the time you are following the river, you will need to ensure your safety and you will have to have food and, if necessary, avoid hypothermia.

So the first rule is: if you get lost, stay where you are! It is from this place that rescuers will start looking for the lost.

Myth 8: Wearing wet clothes is always better than going bare

Not always. For example, if the temperature is below zero and you wear wet clothes, they will cool your body for a long time. Water has a very large heat capacity: it takes a lot of energy and time to heat or cool a part of it. Incidentally, that is why the climate of coastal cities is milder than those located in the center of the continent.

The body will expend energy trying to heat the water in moist tissue and not heat its own internal organs.

Myth 9: In the desert, first of all, you must find a source of drinking water

Myth 10: Preserve water for later

If you are thirsty, you need to sit in the shade, cool off and drink water. If you stay out in the sun and don’t stay hydrated, you could get heatstroke and pass out. At the same time, ironically, you’ll still have the water with you…
