10 Smart Eco-Packaging That Hopefully Will Soon Be Available Worldwide

Plastic was a great solution when it was invented in 1860. But at that time, no one imagined that it would become a gigantic ecological problem, as it takes over a thousand years to decompose. In addition, the materials used for their manufacture are usually composed of toxic chemicals that, when in contact with food, cause damage to health.

That’s why most companies take care of implementing green solutions to offer their products to the public without harming the environment.

At the awesome.club, we have compiled some of the most interesting ideas that have started to be used in some countries. If we’re lucky, over time they will become commonplace in all corners of the world.

1. Box and instruction manual

Camera brand Nikon commissioned designer Karin Hilgenkamp to create a box that would also serve as a user manual. When the buyer takes out the camera, she presses the sides of the box and follows the directions to assemble a small instruction manual, which is easy to keep for future reference. This design meets the requirement to give packaging a long life.

2. Edible coffee cup

The famous fast food chain KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) also joined the effort to avoid the waste generated by packaging. In 2015, the England branch hired The Robin Collective, a studio dedicated to creating edible packaging, to make a cup of coffee.

The container is made from a type of biscuit very popular in England called a biscuit, which is wrapped in a layer of heat-resistant white chocolate and sugar paper. So after drinking coffee, people can eat the delicious cup.

3. Banana leaves instead of bags

Rimping supermarket chain in Chiangmai, Thailand, uses banana leaves to wrap vegetables. These leaves are known to stay green longer (meaning they don’t lose flexibility) and have fibers that make them very resistant. Therefore, they are organic residues that decompose naturally, without contaminating the environment.

4. Packaging that protects the content and the planet

Packaging placed inside the boxes to protect fragile objects from impacts is certainly useful. The problem is that they go to the trash as soon as the package is emptied. So it’s encouraging that there are companies like Mushroom Packaging that produce 100% compostable packaging (rich in nutrients that are released into the soil) at an affordable cost.

5. Cardboard with a minimal amount of paper

Hungarian stylist Otília Erdélyi created a packaging for eggs that protects them and is stackable. It is made of microwave-processed cardboard and, in the words of its creator, has much less material than is normally used. The elliptical shape of the package allows the user to take the eggs out easily.

6. Water in cardboard boxes

The ability to take drinking water anywhere and stay hydrated all day is something so practical that the sale of bottled water has skyrocketed in recent years. However, the plastic in the packaging is highly polluting. Although many companies have tried to give useful alternative uses to empty bottles, the truth is that they take a long time to decompose. Boxed Water proposes the solution of using cardboard boxes as packaging.

7. Biodegradable packaging

Tomorrow Machine is a Swedish studio, with offices in Stockholm and Paris, specializing in packaging design and food concepts. To achieve this, the team of researchers and designers makes tests with different organic materials.

The raw materials used include caramelized sugar, beeswax, agar-agar and water. The result is not only biodegradable and effective packaging to keep the contents in good condition, but also an eye-catching package.

8. Paper bottles

Ecologic Brands is a company that manufactures paper bottles. The exterior is made of high-performance fibers, which can be recycled or converted into compost, responsible for preventing the contents from leaking. The interior has 60% less plastic than regular bottles, thanks to its recyclable non-laminated monopolymer structure. In addition, the bottles are bisphenol (BPA) free.

9. Plantable packaging

The organic and sustainable beauty industry could not be left behind in this fight for the care of the environment. Pangea Organics, for example, doesn’t just create personal care products with natural ingredients, but puts them in boxes containing plant seeds, such as basil, that germinate after planting. Fortunately, this is an idea that has been around for some time.

10. Ecological reusable Zip bags

The practicality of Zip bags has gained an ecological alternative. We are referring to reusable bags manufactured by the company Blue Avocado. They can be used multiple times to transport personal items and food because they are leak proof.
