We often complain that our photographs do not turn out the way we would like. Sometimes we have the impression of being visually overweight, with some distorted limb or huge dark circles under our eyes. And taking endless selfies with filters to get a single shot you like, or repeating that you’re not photogenic, won’t solve the problem.
We, from awesome.club, we chatted with professional photographer Aleksei Serov and found out how to look better in photographs with simple posing tips. In the bonus you will learn how to properly prepare for a photo session.
Turn the nose towards the light source
Light is probably one of the most important elements in photography. It can make anything bulky look flat or change its shape. To prevent expression marks and dark circles from being highlighted, always turn your nose towards the light source.
don’t hold your breath
The camera captures any awkward posture and tension ruthlessly. If the person being photographed is holding their breath at the time of the photo, this will be reflected in the expression on their face and body, which will appear awkward.
Bend all the joints
Strange as it may seem, you should try to bend all the joints: shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, lower back. It can be a little difficult to get this pose on the first few tries.
To look natural, you can simply move freely or dance. Remembering that no photo will be good if you don’t feel comfortable while taking it.
Don’t lean on your arms
An elegant pose, where the person leans on one or both arms, looks good only in theory. When straining the arms, they immediately become visually voluminous. If you lean using the strength of your back and abdomen instead of your arms, your whole body will appear firmer. One option is to just rest your arms, without contracting them, on your knees.
Do not force the fist against the cheeks
Forcing the fist against the cheeks not only makes the hands visually bigger, it also distorts the face. If you want to touch your face with your hands, just lightly touch your fingers to your chin and cheeks. In this case, it is not necessary to bend your fingers, it is enough to stretch them.
Don’t put your hands in your hair
This pose is so complex, it’s difficult for even professional models to do well in it. Also, the focus of the photo will shift to your arm. So if you don’t intend to expose it, it’s best to place your hands on your legs, waist or wrap one of them around the other forearm. It will make your appearance in the photo much more stylish and elegant.
Don’t hide your hands in your pockets or bend your fingers too much.
Ideally, all body parts should be visible. That means you don’t have to hide a hand behind your back, bend a leg, or shove your hands completely into your pockets. The ideal in this pose is to hide only the thumbs, leaving the other fingers relaxed on the thighs.
If you turn your head, cover your neck with your hair or a scarf.
The pose of a woman looking over her shoulder looks very feminine and elegant. The only negative is that the folds on the neck appear, but we can easily hide them with hair or a scarf.
Do not look directly into the camera lens.
Find a spot on the right, just above the photographer’s head, and aim your gaze in that direction. This way, your eyes will look much better in photos.
act naturally
Even the most sophisticated posing tips won’t be effective if you’re not looking natural. The spontaneous smile will always stand out in any photographic technique. Also, a little distraction and some banter are essential in a photo shoot.
