10 Questions That Still Don’t Have a Clear Scientific Answer

Scientific thinking doesn’t stop. What 20 years ago was considered science fiction in the field of medicine and technology has today become part of everyday life. However, there are a number of questions for which science has not yet been able to provide an unambiguous answer. For example, how life came about, what happened before the Big Bang, how to explain meeting a ghost or how to teach a computer to understand 100% of human language.

O awesome.club is in favor of pleasant debates. If you have an idea or have experienced the pleasure of being the first to discover or solve some of these riddles, we look forward to reading your feedback!

1. How did life come about?

There are many theories about this. But even under a unified concept, its followers can’t always agree on the details. For example, advocates of “primordial soup” (this is not a secret cult of cooks, but an official term) consider that the Earth itself formed complex molecules in which the first life arose. However, the adherents of this idea do not have an opinion on where the most important processes took place: in volcanic craters, on the ground, under the ice? We have a lot of opinions, but that doesn’t get us any closer to the answer.

2. How does the placebo effect work?

A placebo is a substance with no obvious curative characteristics (e.g. water) that can
be used as a medicine. The phenomenon of improving well-being due to the use of the pseudo-drug is known as the placebo effect.

There are a few theories about how this works. Some consider that the person’s conscience creates conditions for the body’s recovery, since the patient believes that the treatment will help. Others talk about the beneficial effect of a simple conversation with the doctor, but perceive the absence of a clinically significant therapeutic effect. In any case, the placebo effect is a question that so far remains unanswered.

3. How to make a computer understand what people say?

The fact is that everyday language is a complex structure that depends on many things. In the case of artificial intelligence, interpretation is very important. For example, the phrase: “Have a plate of soup”, people perceive it as an invitation, in which the word plate describes a certain amount of soup. The computer perceives such a phrase literally as an order to take the plate🇧🇷

Currently, the computational brain is a simple device that is not able to perceive context from a human point of view. Therefore, making a computer understand 100% of what people say seems impossible.

4. Scientific knowledge is contested over time. Maybe we are standing in the same place and we have no idea about it?

Any science is always in the elaboration phase. But that doesn’t mean we don’t know anything. It simply means that we are in the process of learning and thus some preconceived instincts can be questioned. It is normal, we no longer regress to a state of ignorance, but we learn something new and we take another step on the way to a better understanding of the nature of things.

For example, airplane flights are the result of studying and understanding the laws of aerodynamics. And at one point it was considered impossible. Will we know everything one day? Current science has no answer to this question.

5. Isn’t this obvious?

Possibly something seems obvious to you once you discover how it works. But be honest with yourself and ask yourself, was this something obvious before you knew it? Such a phenomenon is generally regarded as a kind of hindsight bias. It works like this: the moment we are told a certain truth in detail, we understand that it is founded and we intuitively feel that it is a fact. Hence the feeling of “this is obvious, since it cannot be otherwise”.

6. Are there human pheromones?

Can a person smell fear, malice or a representative of the opposite sex from afar? Not. On the other hand, many people can recognize their friends literally by smell. Also, certain chemicals, such as the body’s natural aroma or breath, can cause a certain reaction in a person. However, even if there is some kind of human pheromone, it is still unclear how our body decodes the chemical signal.

7. We know that animals migrate, but how does it work?

This is how harriers migrate from the Netherlands to West Africa: the animals can migrate thousands of kilometers during the year fleeing temperature changes in search of food or breeding conditions. At the same time, different species use different orientations and navigation methods, such as the Earth’s magnetic field. However, the mechanism of this “logistics” has not been sufficiently studied.

8. Many people claim to see ghosts: how can this be explained?

It is important to understand that many paranormal phenomena have a scientific explanation related to physiological processes. For example, the sensation of leaving the body can be caused by a violation of nerve processes in the temporoparietal muscle. The effects of eerie sounds, chills or terror upon waking are caused by sleep paralysis.

When asking questions of a parapsychologist on the subject of spirits, it is necessary to speak precisely about their state. The age, the place of encounter with the spirit, the chilling history of this place or simple and poetic information must be eliminated immediately, as this is information that only confuses. So if the issue is a distant experience and not yours, then it will be impossible to get to the truth.

9. Do other people see the outside world the same way I do?

Nobody knows. Even if people with color blindness are not taken into account, it cannot be safely said that for millions of people on our planet, the blue sky is completely the same.

10. What happened before the Big Bang?

The only answer that can be given to this question at this point is “nothing”, as there is no “before”. There was no space or time. The only weak point of such an answer: it all happened out of nowhere. However, “nothing” for the mind does not mean the same as “nothing” for physics. But this is another story.
