There are things in life that take a long time, and nature proves it. And when it comes to flowering, some plants go through processes that can last up to a hundred years. Others, on the other hand, like the so-called queen of the night, have single-day night cycles to unfold their petals. Although these are events that can be emotional, it should also be noted that in some cases it means that the plant has reached the end of its life and, after bearing fruit, it will be replaced by a new generation.
O awesome.club researched and collected information about some plants, whose flowers can only be seen with a little patience and, in some cases, it is possible to say that only with a lot of luck.
1. Queen of the Night (Selenicereus grandiflorus๐ง๐ท
Also known as the lady of the night, it is a cactus of humid regions with white flowers, which only open one night during the summer months. The advantage is that it is a plant that can be kept at home, in a hanging pot or even at the foot of a tree, where it can be fixed.
2. Bromeliad fasciata (Aechmea fasciata๐ง๐ท
It is a plant native to Brazil. Due to its relatively slow growth, it takes three to four years to see its inflorescence. It is made up of vibrant pink parts (bracts), which contain small but striking violet flowers. It only blooms once before it dies, but the good news is that the flower can last up to six months.
3. Himalayan Lily (cardiocrinum giganteum๐ง๐ท
This lily can reach 3.5 meters in height and is considered the largest of its kind. It takes about seven years for the bulb to reach flowering size, before ending its life cycle. The new bulbs produced can propagate and slightly reduce the flowering time, which can take three to five years.
4. Woody bamboos
Something special is the flowering of bamboos, to the point of being considered a mystery to botanists. It occurs in long cycles, of more than ten decades in some cases, and also often occurs at the same time throughout the region. After producing the seeds, the plants die.
5. Corpse Flower (Amorphophallus titanum๐ง๐ท
The so-called corpse flower (it gives off a fetid smell), with a long and fleeting flowering, has earned its place on the list. Originally from Indonesia, it blooms three to four times during its 40 years of life, which is why special public events are organized for this event.
6. Agave (American agave๐ง๐ท)
Some plants die soon after flowering, but at least, as in the case of this agave, the so-called flowering stem can reach up to 8 meters in height and this occurs every 10 to 12 years.
7. Kurinji plant (Strobilanthes Kunthiana๐ง๐ท
This shrub, found in southern India, blooms only once every 12 years during September and October. Interestingly, other species of the same genus bloom approximately every 7 years.
8. Northern Japan Magnolia (kobus magnolia)
This tree native to Japan has a slow growth and can reach up to 20 meters in height. Young species do not flower, so it can take up to 30 years for the tree (grown from a seed) to reach its full flowering potential. Once mature, it will bear white, fragrant flowers between late winter and early spring.
9. Talipot palm (Corypha umbraculifera๐ง๐ท
It is considered the plant with the largest inflorescence in the world. It flowers only once, between 30 and 80 years, before it bears fruit, after that, its life cycle ends. It produces thousands of yellow-green fruits, each with a single seed.
10. Titanca (puya raimondii๐ง๐ท
Known as titanca, it is native to Bolivia and Peru, and can be found at altitudes between 3,200 and 4,800 meters. It blooms around one hundred years old. With its inflorescence, it can reach up to 12 meters in height.
