When a book is adapted for the big screen, we are always anxiously wondering how the result will turn out and, more importantly, how many changes will it make? However, sometimes, we can be in for a big surprise.
At the awesome.club🇧🇷 here are ten characters who changed a bit in their movie version, from appearance to personality.
1. Beatrice “Tris” Prior, of Divergent
2. Annabeth Chase, from Percy Jackson and the olympians
Annabeth Chase was the daughter of the goddess Athena in the saga of Percy Jackson. In the books, she is described as a blonde girl with gray eyes, with an intense and analytical gaze, as well as being extremely intelligent and a determined warrior, which went against the stereotypes associated with this hair color.
3. Jack Reacher
Tom Cruise embodied this character twice. However, he was not well suited for the role, as, according to fans, Jack Reacher should have been played by a more imposing actor, while still maintaining the elegance of someone like James Bond. In anticipation of knowing who could play the enigmatic military investigator, a list of actors best suited for the role has emerged. Among them, Henry Cavill.
4. Bella Swan, from Twilight
5. Jordan Baker, from The big Gatsby
The character in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel is one of the most beloved for her personality. In the 2013 film, the young woman is more sarcastic compared to the 1974 version. However, the newer version’s Jordan takes a back seat, and we don’t know much about her, nor her closeness to Nick, the narrator either. in film production and in the book.
6. Willy Wonka, from The fantastic chocolate factory
Chocolate genius Willy Wonka has only had two adaptations for the big screen. In the second one, Johnny Deep played a very different character from the one in the first film. According to the novel, Willy Wonka was physically more like Gene Wilder’s version of the 1970s classic’s protagonist. However, Johnny’s work has become iconic for its eccentricity, its origins, and its looks peculiar and more faithful to the descriptions in the book.
7. Edward Cullen, from Twilight
The main vampire in the Twilight Saga should have auburn hair instead of brown. Also, his eye color was constantly changing, something that wasn’t as evident in the movies. Before turning into a vampire, they were green, and when they turned, they ranged from gold to black (sometimes they were even red).
8. Tiger Lily Princess, from Peter Pan
Peter Pan is one of the most beautiful children’s works, which we remember for its various adaptations, such as Disney animation. However, in Peter Pan (2015) there was a rather controversial detail regarding the ethnicity of the natives of Terra do Nunca, especially in relation to Princess Tigrinha, played by Rooney Mara. As in the Disney version, in the original story, the indigenous people of the island were very similar to the North American natives, so the choice of Mara to play the role was not very right.
9. Ginny Weasley, from Harry Potter
Unfortunately, Ginny didn’t carry the same weight in the adaptations of harry porter, as she was reduced to a love interest for Harry. In the books, she is described as smart, dynamic, and eloquent, which we haven’t seen much in the movies. Also, as a good Weasley, she should be more red-haired and freckled, like her brothers.
10. Marvel’s Nick Fury
Originally, Nick Fury was Caucasian, but in the early 2011 comics, he underwent a radical change, taking the successful interpretation of Samuel L. Jackson as a model. After that, the actor continued playing the role and the character, in all subsequent comics and animated series, was inspired by his appearance and performance.
What other literary characters do you know that were adapted for film in a radically different way?
