10 Holes in Movie and TV Scripts That Were Finally Explained

Have you ever seen in a movie some detail or situation that could change the course of history, but without the slightest sense? These are the plot holes that can end the movie or leave you thinking for a long time, trying to find a credible answer to plot flaws.

we, from awesome.club, we have gathered some examples of these holes and their explanations. That way, you can forgive the writers who seemed to have blown the movie apart.

1. Cypher enters the Matrix alone

One of the most talked about plot holes is in the 1999 movie The Matrix. One of the bad guys, the character Cypher, betrays his companions to deliver Neo to Agent Smith.

On his own, he comes to an agreement with the agent, asking in return to return everything to the way it was before. However, as we are told at the beginning of the film, it takes at least two people to get in and out of the matrix. One person would have to operate the access, “hacking” the code, so that the other could enter. So how did he manage to operate the system on his own?

The Wachowsky directors and sisters responded in a chat that Cypher was an experienced programmer and had written a program that automated the process. In the scene, when he talks to Neo, you can see this code on the screen.

2. The door of the Titanic

More than 20 years ago, when James Cameron’s Titanic came out, audiences always wondered why Jack didn’t climb in the door with Rose, if the two fit perfectly in there.

The answer to this supposed script hole is not the size of the door, but the weight of the two characters. According to calculations made by the American Physical Society, the door was made of oak, a type of wood that doesn’t float very well, and if we added the weight of Jack and Rose, the door would have sunk into the icy waters of the Atlantic and the two would have frozen to death or drowned. So even if they fit, the door wouldn’t support their weight.

3. Kevin orders pizza without having phone service

In the first few minutes of Home Alone, we see a tree knocking down a pole in front of the McCallisters’ home, leaving them without electricity and phone reception. This keeps them asleep and, in their rush to go to the airport, they forget about Kevin. When the mother notices, she tries to call from Paris, but the line doesn’t work. However, later in the movie, we see Kevin getting a pizza he must have ordered over the phone. How is this possible, if they had no service?

To solve this script hole, a newspaper contacted Hank Hultquist, vice president of one of the most important telephone companies in the United States, and asked if it was possible not to have international service, but still make local calls. The executive replied that, at the time of the film, it was entirely plausible that the service would be suspended in this way, since the connections, which were by cables, could be interrupted at any time in a call made from such a distant place. But because it was another type of connection, the phone could still work for local calls.

4. Marty McFly’s Parents Don’t Recognize Him

In 1985’s Back to the Future, Marty McFly travels back in time to 1955 and spends a few days at his mother’s house, ensuring that she falls in love with his father so he can be born. At the end of the movie, everything is resolved, but isn’t it strange that neither parent recognizes the boy who helped them get together 30 years earlier?

Bob Gale, co-writer of the film, alongside Robert Zemeckis, responded to this script flaw in an interview. Lorraine and George, Marty’s parents, only had contact with him for eight days, when they were 17 years old, and didn’t see him daily. That’s why it’s very difficult for anyone to remember the person they met at that age, let alone without the help of a photograph.

5. Explosions on Pandora without Oxygen

In James Cameron’s Avatar, all the action takes place on the planet Pandora, where humans are trying to obtain a source of energy from the natives. However, in this atmosphere, it is impossible to breathe, so humans have to use oxygen tanks in order to live.

If there is no oxygen, how can there be explosions? Don’t explosions need to absorb oxygen from the air to occur?

The answer to this plot hole is very simple; in the film, it is never mentioned that the environment is devoid of oxygen, but rather that it is full of carbon dioxide and is poisonous to humans. Also, what would an action movie be without some explosions?

6. The Friends sofa

If you’ve watched the hit series Friends, have you also wondered how Monica, Ross, Chandler, Rachel, Joey, and Phoebe always found the main seat available at the “Central Perk” coffee shop?

That’s because in a city as populous as New York it would be impossible to find that empty spot every time you went to one of those typical coffee shops. But a journalist, after analyzing the entire series very well, gave the answer: the sofa was always reserved. This can be seen across multiple episodes, and even the LEGO Central Perk set also includes this little disclaimer.

7. Buzz freezes, even though it’s not a toy

One of the plot holes in the classic cartoon Toy Story has to do with the character Buzz Lightyear, who gets into trouble because he thinks he’s not a toy, thinking he’s a real astronaut on a space mission. But when someone enters the room, he too freezes like his toy companions until they are alone again.

In a recent interview, Pete Docter, creative director at Pixar, stated that while there were many explanations, in the end it didn’t matter because it wasn’t relevant to the story. But the simplest explanation is that while Buzz doesn’t want to accept that it’s a toy, this act of freezing is an action in all toys. Something that is programmed into your subconscious to warn you in some way.

8. Why does Scar let Simba live?

We all know the plot of The Lion King, in which the evil Scar eliminates his brother Mufasa to become the only king of the jungle. But it would all be over if Mufasa had done this to Simba when he was little. In the wild, lions kill their cubs to avoid future problems.

However, in the film things are not that simple. Rob Minkoff and Don Hahn, producers of the animated film, have revealed that Scar and Mufasa are not actually brothers. Also, Scar tried to kill Simba several times, but not directly, most of the time using the hyenas, which always failed.

9. Why didn’t Frodo travel on the eagles?

In the movie The Lord of the Rings, Frodo and the society of the ring must go a long way to destroy the only ring in the flames of a volcano in Mordor.

Ever since the movie came out, fans have been wondering why Gandalf didn’t summon the giant eagle to take Frodo straight to that place?

While many of the claims focus on the size of the eagles, saying they would be very visible to Sauron’s eyes, the answer is a little more complex. Giant eagles are a race as old as dwarves. And, like many beings in history created by Tolkien, they have their own organization, communicate with each other, and obviously also fear the evil Sauron. It is not so easy to order them to simply do something. Because they are sentient, like the Ent tree race, they have a will of their own that makes it impossible to force them to do anything.

10. The alien spaceship without ID4 antivirus

The movie Independence Day was a box office success, grossing over 1 billion reais worldwide in 1996. Roland Emmerich tells us how an alien spaceship arrives on Earth to subjugate humanity. Scientist David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) and soldier Steven Hiller (Will Smith) muster up the courage to fight the seemingly indestructible airships.

David intercepts a transmission from the aliens and decides to change the code to create a virus that ends the alien invasion.

For years, it was questioned how it was possible that David could have created such code in such a short time. Dean Devlin, one of the creators, explained that the language of computers is binary, zero and one, and all David did was convert the zeros to one and vice versa, and that’s what sent him back to the mothership of the alien army.
