10 Celebrities Who Were Rejected At First For Not Being Considered Beautiful

It’s not uncommon to find a film in which the protagonist, let’s say, looks ugly (or has made an effort to look), but has enormous charm. Thick glasses, flashy clothes or even heavy makeup, none of this is capable of fooling the public, who know that enormous beauty is hidden there.

The fact is that many famous actresses today have already gone through embarrassing situations involving beauty (or the concept of beauty that society imposes on us), whether in fiction or in reality. And they didn’t care a bit about it and built brilliant careers.

At the awesome.club we do believe in inner beauty and that’s why we created this list of 10 women who, with their talent, filled our world with beauty.

1. Meryl Streep

It’s hard to believe that anyone could have denied Meryl Streep a role, as her talent and prestige are synonymous with guaranteed success. But yes, it happened. And in which production did they have the luxury of rejecting her? Well, Meryl would like to be the woman that King Kong kidnaps and takes to the top of a building in the eponymous 1976 film. As the actress herself said, the director’s son introduced her to his father, but when he saw her, he said in Italian : “Why are you bringing me that ugly thing?” Of course, the guy didn’t know that Meryl knew the language and understood what he said.

When remembering what happened, the genius actress said: “This malicious opinion could end my dreams or force me to pull myself together and believe in myself. I took a breath and said, “I’m sorry you think I’m too ugly for your movie, but your opinion is just one of thousands.” With her 21 Oscar nominations and 3 Academy statuettes received, she proved that this fruitless attempt to get a role was just a rejection, not a failure.

2. kesha

This singer with a beautiful voice was criticized by her producer at the beginning of her career, who compared her to a refrigerator and forced her to follow severe diets, which provoked a bulimia nervosa that she had to deal with in 2014. During this phase, she often publishes photos on social networks where she is seen “naturally”, passing on the message of the need to love ourselves as we are, with our flaws and virtues.

However, she is often criticized on Instagram because of her physique, to which she responds, remaining true to her style: “I see that they want me to know that they think I’m ugly … Well, I understand that it’s your opinion but I don’t agree. I’m not perfect, but I’m magic.”

3. Winona Ryder

This well-known actress worked in iconic 90s films and currently plays endearing characters like Joyce Byers in Stranger Things. In an interview, she admitted that when she was a teenager and was participating in a casting, she was interrupted by the director, who said: “Listen girl, you shouldn’t be an actress, because you are not beautiful enough. You should go back to where you came from and study.”

Those words might have made her give up if not for her parents. “This is proof of the strength my parents gave me and how they raised me (…) They always taught me that it was much better to be a unique person than to be like the majority”.

4. Reese Witherspoon

How is it possible that the actress who played a stunning woman in Legally Blonde might not be considered beautiful? Reese stated that, at her first auditions, she was rejected because she was not considered tall or thin enough to be a Hollywood star, which made her feel insecure about her appearance for years. In this regard, she said, “I don’t really care about their opinions, I’m stubborn.” And she added: “You have to be focused and strong, because you need a tenacious personality to deal with rejection.”

5. Lea Michele

When she was 13, she was told by an agent that as soon as she turned fifteen, she should get her nose retouched if she wanted to make it big in the entertainment industry. Lea said that although she intended to follow the advice, her mother never allowed it. While that refusal wasn’t pleasant at the time, today, her decision fills her with pride. She states: “You don’t have to look like others, you must love yourself for who you are”.

6. Pink

Pink said that when she got into the music industry, most people told her, “You’ll never be on the covers of magazines because you’re not pretty enough.” To which the singer replied: “I’m totally comfortable with that, I know my strengths: I work hard, I’m talented, I’m fun and a good person.” It was this confidence that allowed him to appear on numerous platforms in which his best traits and, above all, his humility were highlighted.

Furthermore, in a speech, she spoke about the concern she felt when hearing her daughter saying that she didn’t feel beautiful. The conclusion she came to from that conversation with the girl was: “It is not us who must change, it is people who must do it to discover other forms of beauty”.

7. Lady Gaga

The singer revealed that, at the beginning of her career, her body was not suitable for an industry that was looking for a certain profile of a female figure, which led her to feel very insecure about herself. However, this also led her to try harder to demonstrate all the talent she had to offer, which made her unique.

Later, she came to the conclusion that “I didn’t want to be like the others, sensual like other women”. She wanted, instead, to have her own image and for her beauty to emanate from within. “I think what makes me beautiful is seeing the happiness of my fans. When they tell me that the music I made has changed their lives in some way, that’s what makes me beautiful.”

8. Barbra Streisand

Barbra said that growing up, she had to put up with the fact that even her mother didn’t think she was pretty, and that when she started looking for acting work, she was constantly rejected for not having the requested physical characteristics. But, far from giving up and, despite her mother’s insistence, she decided to fight. “I had to go out into the world and show that I was someone and that somehow they would remember me.” So, she told herself that if she couldn’t succeed as an actress, she would enter show business as a singer and, after recording a song, managed to make producers and audiences fall in love with her voice.

Later, Barbra played film roles where she showcased her multifaceted talent, so she’s not afraid to claim, “I can be in the vogueat Harper’s BazaarI can go where any model or star has gone simply because I am who I am.”

9. Nia Vardalos

When Nia realized that at the beginning of her acting career, she was not receiving any job offers, she decided to ask her agent why, and he replied: “you are not beautiful enough to star in a movie, nor fat enough to be an actress. of a cartoonish character”. So she decided to write a screenplay based on a play in which she would be the protagonist and which would later become a movie: Greek wedding.

However, when the film was released, studio executives and critics alike reported misgivings about the actress’ appearance: “They labeled me with words like overweight and unattractive… hey, I’m just fat and I love that word. I used the word ‘fat’ in the title of the film in English. Not a bad thing. What happens is that we give it a power it doesn’t have. So I’m fat. And?” Despite all doubts, the film was so successful that it even had a sequel.

10. Sally Field

As with Nia, Sally’s agent couldn’t believe it when the actress wanted to stop working on series to find projects on the big screen. She told him: “you can’t do that, you can’t be in movies. Not pretty enough.”

Far from giving up, the first thing Sally did was fire her, because she was clearly not the agent she needed if she wanted to succeed. But this rejection was the first of many: “It was a very difficult time for women who wanted to work in the world of cinema. Successful people were tall and beautiful models, which was not my case.” However, she found motivation and continued: “If you keep thinking ‘My God, I’m not beautiful or smart enough’, your spirit will be weakened”“. And after reflecting on her career, she said: “I’m not so concerned about what others think. I’m starting to let go of the feeling that I have to work hard to do things I don’t want to do, an impulse that has always been tied to the feeling that I’m not good enough.”
