As a child, our favorite cartoons taught us that good always triumphs over evil, leaving no chance for opponents. But when reviewing the classic cartoons in the mature age, we started to realize that some of the animation villains weren’t all that bad. We just get them wrong.
we, from awesome.club, we go back to childhood to take a fresh look at Maleficent, Ursula, Scar and other iconic cartoon antiheroes and find out why they harm everyone. Now we feel sorry for some of them, as we seem to accuse them without any justification.
Mr. SpongeBob Krabs Square Pants
Yes, Mr. Krabs is extremely greedy and doesn’t care about Krabs staff and even his own daughter, Pearl. However, Eugene doesn’t try to hide his true identity. He is a talented businessman, gifted with great business acumen. Also, in his heart of hearts, Mr. Krabs cares for Pearl and SpongeBob.
Tom from Tom and Jerry
For the vast majority of viewers, Tom and Jerry is a cartoon about a cat unsuccessfully trying to capture Jerry the mouse. In fact, there is a popular belief that Tom and Jerry are the best of friends. The cat only pretends to hate the unwanted neighbor, while in reality it defends it from its owner. Otherwise, Mom Two Shoes might get another “predator” who will finish off Jerry.
Mom Gothel from Tangled
Mama Gothel proved to be a loving and caring mother to Rapunzel: she took care of the princess and protected her, showered her with gifts and pampered her, letting her do little pranks. And what were the girl’s real parents doing in the meantime? Every year, on her birthday, they sent flying lanterns into the sky. Although, in our opinion, it would have made much more sense to set up a search party, which would surely have found the imposing tower where Rapunzel and Gothel lived one day.
Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty
Maleficent’s feud with the royal court began when the monarchs failed to invite her to their daughter Aurora’s birthday party. Then the sorceress felt humiliated and offended and cursed the newborn princess. In our opinion, the whole mess was caused by the king and queen.
Ursula from The Little Mermaid
Ursula is just a businesswoman: she provides services to sea creatures and deserves to be paid for it. When the Little Mermaid asked for help, the sorceress didn’t try to trick her. Úrsula made a fair deal: to receive the legs, Ariel would have to give up her voice. And if the prince, for whom she risked leaving everything behind, did not kiss her, she would be destined to become the sorceress’s prisoner. The Little Mermaid made her decision.
The Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
The Evil Queen is a victim of male-dominated society, and in this situation a woman has to be simply stunning to be able to marry a noble individual and share his leadership. Just remember Henry VIII, the King of England, who got rid of his wives to remarry others, younger and more desirable. Therefore, the Queen’s rivalry with Snow White is understandable.
Gaston from Beauty and the Beast
By choosing Beast over Gaston, Belle may have made a fatal mistake. The guy is handsome, talented in hunting, ready for a serious relationship and is a good singer. Yes, Gaston’s upbringing leaves a lot to be desired, but it’s never too late to improve. Furthermore, he has proven that he is willing to make any sacrifice for Belle’s well-being. Not everyone would have the courage to enter a bewitched castle to fight a monster for his beloved.
Cinderella’s Stepmother
In a world where women play a secondary role, Cinderella’s stepmother just wants a better life for herself and her daughters. She married for convenience and dreamed of fruitful marriages for her daughters, Drizella and Anastasia, who were far from the beauty standards set by society. No wonder Lady Tremaine did all she could to keep her beautiful stepdaughter out of the ball.
Tai Lung from Kung Fu Panda
Tai Lung is living proof of a psychological concept that says “all problems come from childhood”. The little snow leopard has grown up convinced that he is the Dragon Warrior. When Tai Lung’s expectations were shattered, he went into a narcissistic rage. Even more so because his mentor, Master Shifu, didn’t even try to support and encourage his best student at the most frustrating time of his life.
Scar from The Lion King
Get ready to know the truth: King Mufasa and Scar were not brothers. According to the producer of the cartoon, in nature the pride leader can allow another male to join him only if they are not related: “There are packs that have two male lions. So there is a difficult relationship between them, because they have different fathers, which means they are not the same. One lion will always be repressed by the other.” This explains Scar’s behavior: having spent a lifetime in the Lion King’s shadow, he is doomed to become a villain, as the only way to gain power in the pack is to kill the leader.
