Surely you’ve heard the expression “so-and-so lives in a rosy world” — referring to a perfect, idyllic place. And although it is impossible to prove whether this “pink world” really exists, there are, indeed, several animals of this color, coloring and beautifying the Planet.
At the awesome.club We researched and created a list of some species that were awarded the “biological lottery” with the dazzling pink color. Follow up!
1. Spoonbill
The American spoonbill, also known as platalea ajaja, lives between the southern United States and South America. This beautiful bird, a relative of herons, can measure up to 71 centimeters, has a long and flat beak, similar to a spoon, which it uses to dig mud on the banks of rivers and lakes and obtain its food.
The color of its plumage is a result of its diet, as it consumes invertebrates rich in carotenoid pigments. While they have not yet reached maturity, they are white in color with some pinkish tones, gaining a stronger pink color as they grow. Here in Brazil, they can be found mainly in the Pantanal.
2. Elephant moth
These insects belong to the family sphingidae🇧🇷 They are mostly found in Europe and Asia, but have also been seen in Canada and other regions of North America. They grow between five and seven centimeters and, if it weren’t for their beautiful colors, they would certainly cause fear due to their size.
3. Pink dolphin
Also known as red dolphin, spotted dolphin or uiara this cetacean is friendly and curious. It inhabits the Amazon River basin, but can also be found in the Orinoco and upper Rio Madeira in Bolivia.
Although the reason for their color is unknown, one of the accepted theories is that these animals are born gray and turn pink in adulthood, with the wear and tear of the skin.
4. Axolotl
This impressive animal is a species of amphibian in the order Caudata, in the salamander family. It measures about 15 centimeters and, to the naked eye, has the appearance of a large tadpole with legs and a tail.
It is endemic to lakes near Mexico City, meaning it is not found anywhere else in the world. Currently, these animals are in danger of extinction for several reasons, such as the loss of their natural habitat, the introduction of exotic fish, overexploitation, contamination and their consumption as food.
5. Flamingo
This elegant bird, with long legs and neck, can measure between 90 and 140 centimeters. There are five species and they can be found in South America, the Caribbean, Africa, India, South and Southwest Asia and Europe. All species have pink plumage, but of different intensity depending on their diet. For example, the European flamingo is almost white; the bird that lives in the Caribbean is salmon colored.
6. Orchid Praying Mantis
Also known as the Malayan Orchid Mantis or Pink Praying Mantis, this insect inhabits the tropical and subtropical forests of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Burma and Sumatra and thrives mainly in warmer, wetter regions. Due to its color, which varies between white, magenta and sometimes yellow, and the shape of its four legs, similar to petals, it can easily blend in among the flowers. This allows it to trick its prey and capture it.
7. Mourning gecko
The species belongs to the family of geconids, scaly reptiles that can be found in temperate or tropical climates around the world. The grieving gecko has soft pink skin, almost translucent, leaving its veins and arteries visible. In addition, it has a very cute nickname: in certain regions of Mexico, such as Jalisco or Colima, it is known as “besucona” (“beijoqueira”, in Portuguese), as it produces a noise very similar to the kiss of a human being.
8. Galah Cockatoo
This beautiful bird inhabits almost all of Australia and is the most common species in the country. It thrives in grain-producing agricultural areas, but is also found in sparsely wooded regions and the Australian savannah. The bird has a white crest and beak, gray wings and tail, and a pink belly, chest and head. Like most birds in the parrot and macaw family, couples remain together throughout their lives, sharing the care of the young.
9. Pichiciego-minor
This curious mammal lives in central Argentina and is the smallest of the armadillos family, measuring between seven and 11 centimeters. His body is pale pink and he has white fur on his belly. Although they look cute, grabbing one of them to cuddle is very difficult; they are skittish and when they feel threatened they will quickly dig into the ground and disappear altogether.
10. Bargibanti seahorse
This rare animal is one of the smallest species of seahorse on the planet, as it does not reach two centimeters. It has one of the most successful camouflages in the animal kingdom, to the point that the species was only discovered during an analysis of a type of coral called the gorgonian, where it lodges and mimics.
Not all, however, are pink, as this depends on the type of coral colony they inhabit. For example, those who stay in the Muricella plectana They are gray or purple in color.
