Our Planet is full of animals with very intriguing characteristics. Some of them are super weird and seem to be useless, but that’s not always true. Often, it is precisely in the strangest parts that the greatest power of some animals is hidden.
O awesome.club decided to delve into Biology and discovered details of the animal world that prove that evolution always goes in the right direction.
1. The color of the tiger
Everyone knows what a tiger looks like, but only children stop to wonder why this animal has such peculiar tones. You might think that the colors make them even more visible, but for your potential victims, this is not true. Deer, for example, see the world in shades of blue and green, and the tiger’s fur, in keeping with its eyes, is the perfect camouflage.
2. The platypus’ beak
When we look at a platypus, it’s normal to think about how it managed to pass through natural selection. That’s easy: its strange beak makes it a great hunter and a real danger to small marine animals, although it doesn’t see anything underwater. This strange mammal that lives in Australia has a great sense of touch and an electroperception that allows it to capture electric fields. When a crab moves on the bottom of the sea, the ‘radar’ of the platypus wakes up and it already has its food guaranteed.
3. The strange pose of the anteater
This pose is a way for the anteater to show that it feels in danger. This happens because its only personal defense is in the claws of its front legs. He doesn’t even have teeth. This gesture allows you to move your claws more easily, keeping even the most fearsome predators away. It’s the famous “tamanduá hug”, which nobody wants.
4. Turkey and chicken crest
Although we are used to this fun aspect, it is important to know that the organ plays an important role in the lives of these animals. Unlike us, birds do not have sweat glands and cannot sweat. When a bird feels hot, its blood passes over the crest and cools down. In addition, it is by the color of the crest that males can tell when females are in heat.
5. Zebra stripes
There are several theories about the color of these animals. According to one version, the stripes serve to confuse predators and to regulate body temperature. The latest research in this regard suggests that the stripes are a protection against insects. The researchers noticed that flies are less likely to stay on zebras than on horses because they cannot calculate the landing site and desired flight speed.
6. Saiga’s nose
It is because of the strange nose that this species has managed to survive until today. The flexible nose is similar to that of an elephant and serves to warm the air in winter and prevent the inhalation of dust and sand. If it’s cold, the nose warms the air entering the lungs; if it’s hot, it cools you down. Therefore, saiga has a strong ability to adapt to climate change.
7. Sad blobfish face
In reality, blobfish are ‘sad’ when they are taken out of their natural habitat; i.e. deep water. Its muscles are poorly developed and its body is a kind of gelatin that allows it to swim calmly in the high pressure conditions characteristic of the depths.
8. Red butt of some primates
This happens because the animal wants attention. As there are many blood vessels in this region of the body, when the female begins to ovulate, the vessels swell and become redder. In a forest, this sign can be seen from afar. When a male notices the color, he runs towards it because he understands that it is the moment of reproduction.
9. The ‘saw’ of some fish
The saw-like organ serves both for cutting and for orienting the fish. Like the platypus’ beak, the saw has electroreceptors and allows the fish to understand what is happening around it.
10. The third eyelid of animals
The third eyelid of the masked lapwing
You may have noticed that when cats wake up, they have a kind of white film in their eye. After a few blinks, this film goes to the side of the organ. People also have a third eyelid, but it is not as developed. The third eyelid’s function is similar to that of a windshield wiper: cleaning the eyeball.
