Why do we give gifts and should we give gifts? – Map of My Heaven

Inside gift packaging we find much more than an object that was purchased somewhere. The act of giving gifts is ancient and brings with it exchange, gratitude and admiration for someone. Ironically, it is much less than a piece of bond coming undone and much more a bond forming or tightening.

And sometimes it’s so instinctive or cultural that we don’t think about everything it means! Come with us to understand where this practice comes from and who knows, maybe at the end of this text you won’t be so happy that you decide to give it to us too? LOL

Origin of gifting

We wouldn’t know where exactly humanity began exchanging gifts, but the fact is that it’s something very, very old.

The tradition of giving gifts at Christmas, for example, is a reflection of the biblical passage in which the three wise men bring gifts loaded with symbolism to the baby Jesus. To give you an idea, the Christmas gift exchange was made official by Pope Liberius in 354 AD. It’s time, right?

We also know that many tribes around the world exchanged or gave gifts to each other. Some people offered different types of gifts to deities and our society also tends to “present” people who have passed away with flowers – also representing this ceremonial character.

The interesting thing is that the biologist who pioneered Sociobiology, Robert Trivers, argued in the 70s that we are reciprocal altruistic beings. In other words: in a positive way, if we are helped or believe that we will be…we help in return.

In Japan, giving gifts is something strongly linked to respect and traditions that can be extremely complex and full of rules of conduct and good manners.

The fact is that around the world and at any time, gifts are about love, reciprocity and gratitude.

Giving a gift that is not sincere and thinking about the amount spent is really not cool for either the giver or the receiver. Our tip here is that, if you “can’t help it”, at least do an empathy exercise and get a smile with an open heart. This way we are sure that the gift will carry a value of gratitude and positivity! ?

The important thing is to remember (and feel!) that this act speaks more than words can sometimes express, that it comes from within us and creates important emotional memories in our unconscious, linked to good memories, affection and affection.
