The chakras are nothing more than the energy centers responsible for the exchange and assimilation of energies that feed our integrated whole: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. It is in them that Mikao Usui’s Reiki healing method works, bringing health and well being.

What are chakras?

The word “chakra” comes from Sanskrit (an ancient language originated in India) and literally means “wheel” or “vortex”. And, as vortices, the chakras are always in a constant circular motion, donating or capturing energies. The chakras absorb this energy and feed our energy body, so that we can exchange energies with our surroundings.

According to the best known tradition, we have seven main chakras, located along our spine and responsible for the functioning of our organs and glands, either accepting or releasing energies. It happens that sometimes the chakras can be misaligned, cracked or obstructed, and this ends up causing a number of physical and emotional illnesses.

Reiki and the Chakras

One of the main benefits of Reiki is that it provides, through its universal vital energy, the healing of the chakras, realigning them, restoring them, harmonizing them and renewing them.

Imagine that energy flows through the chakras like a river. If a section of the river is obstructed, the entire course is affected.

In a Reiki therapy session, the therapist will place their hands under each of the chakras and apply energy to restore balance.

The seven main chakras in Reiki and their functions in the human body

The 7 chakras are:

• Crown chakra (violet color)
• Front Chakra (third eye, dark blue)
• Throat chakra (light blue)
• Heart chakra (green)
• Umbilical chakra (solar plexus, yellow)
• Sacral chakra (orange)
• Basic chakra (red)

crown chakra

Represented by the colors violet and gold, this chakra is at the top of the head, like a crown, and controls the pineal gland (responsible for the production of melatonin, the sleep-regulating substance). It is the gateway to spirituality, connecting our physical brain to our spiritual mind. It acts on the organs of the cerebral and autonomic nervous system.

Front chakra (or brain chakra)

It is located on the forehead, between the eyes and is represented by dark blue. It is linked to the pituitary gland (pituitary), which is responsible for the secretion of several important hormones, including endorphin (responsible for the feeling of well-being). It is the key to discernment, intuition, imagination, knowledge and perception. It acts on the organs of the nervous, visual and auditory system.

throat chakra

It lies at the height of the throat and is connected to the thyroid and parathyroid glands, which regulate the body’s metabolism. It is where inspiration, creativity and expression flow. It acts on Organs phonetic organs and also the respiratory system. Its color is light blue.

heart chakra

It is located at the level of the heart and controls the thymus, the gland responsible for the functioning of the immune system. Green in color, it is the chakra responsible for feelings and emotions, and acts on the organs of the circulatory system. The more open this chakra is, the greater our ability to love an ever-widening circle of life.

Umbilical chakra (or solar plexus)

It is above the navel and is connected to the pancreas (segregated from various enzymes in our body), being represented by the yellow color. Emotional energies flow through this chakra, gathering information, feelings and perceptions. It works on the digestive system.

sacral chakra

It lies above the genitals and is connected to the sex glands (ovaries and testes). It is the chakra of sexuality and creativity and its color is orange. Primary energies like passion run through this chakra. It acts on the organs of the reproductive system.

base chakra

It is at the base of the spine and is connected to the adrenal glands, responsible for the production and release of adrenaline in our body. Its color is red and it is linked to our earthly existence and our survival. It acts on the spine, bones and kidneys.

How to release the chakras?

Reiki is just one of many ways to balance the chakras. You can also do this through meditation, stones and crystals, or even attitude changes in your day-to-day.
