Who was Saint Valentine?

But why honor this saint, with the name Valentine? And what is your connection with Valentine’s Day?

Legend has it that Valentine was a priest who was sentenced to death for going against the rules imposed by Emperor Claudius II.

The tyrant had prohibited marriages during that period because he believed that single soldiers performed better in battles.

However, the priest fervently believed that marriage was natural and in accordance with God’s plans for humanity. Therefore, he carried them out in secret.

When discovered, he was sentenced to death and allegedly fell in love with a jailer’s daughter.

Finally, on the day his sentence arrives, he sends a message to his loved one, signing it with his name.

So this would be the origin and importance of the Valentine’s Day message: love above all, a concept defended with his own life by a priest in the 3rd century. Beautiful, isn’t it?

Saint Valentine was considered a saint by the Catholic Church on February 14, 496, and therefore the date would be a tribute to the martyr.

Valentine’s Day in Brazil

In short, the celebration of Valentine’s Day in Brazil was purely commercial.

In order to boost sales in a slow period, advertiser João Doria (father of the current governor of São Paulo) created a successful campaign for an old store.

In it, he encouraged celebrating Valentine’s Day and exchanging gifts. Appropriately, it was launched on the eve of the celebration of Saint Anthony’s Day, popularly known as “the matchmaking saint”.

The advertising campaign was a success and has been definitively established in the country since then.
