Unveiling the third commandment – Keeping Sundays and parties – Blog

This is the third and last of the 10 commandments that speak about our conduct before God and the Holy One. In the Old Testament the holy day was Saturday, considered the end of the creation period. After Christ’s resurrection, the holy day became Sunday, indicating a fresh start.

“On the seventh day there will be complete rest in the honor of the Lord” (Ex 31:15). This third commandment says that all Catholics must set aside a day of the week to go to Mass, as well as religious holidays like Easter and Christmas, for example. In addition, these days should be reserved for well-deserved rest and to enjoy family moments. Get away from your obligations to have a day of reverence and affection with those you love.

Celebrating the 10 Commandments

• Go to church or a temple to pray and meditate
• Say family prayers, asking for protection and health for all
• Watch a movie that everyone likes
• Have a meal with your relatives and catch up
• Go to the theater or museum
• Gather the kids to see old photos and videos
• Read something together. It can be an excerpt from the Bible or some short story that brings a message and talk about what they understood.
• Make an afternoon with board games

All these activities will preserve the family bond and friendship that exists between you, which is important to God. The 10 commandments also serve this purpose. Help us find unity, peace and closeness to God. Keeping holy days makes us stop the busy and busy routine, puts us in touch with the sacred, the divine and our inner selves. Take advantage of this third commandment to reflect on what you have been doing, where you want to go and what can be done to make you a better person.
