In all, Psalm 139 has 24 verses. During these verses, King David expresses with firm words all his confidence in the love and justice of the Lord.

1 Lord, you have searched me, and you know me.

2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; from afar you understand my thought.

3 You fence my floor, and my lying down; and you know all my ways.

4 There is still no word in my tongue, behold, soon, O Lord, you know everything.

5 You hemmed me in behind and before, and laid your hand on me.

6 Such knowledge is most wonderful to me; so high that I cannot reach it.

7 Where shall I go from your spirit, or where shall I flee from your face?

8 If I go up to heaven, there you are; if I make my bed in hell, behold, you are there too.

9 If he rises on the wings of the dawn, if he dwells on the farthest reaches of the sea,

10 Even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will sustain me.

11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; then the night will be light around me.

12 Even the darkness does not hide me from you; but the night shines like the day; darkness and light are the same thing to you;

13 For you possessed my kidneys; you covered me in my mother’s womb.

14 I will praise you, because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are your works, and my soul knows it very well.

15 My bones were not hidden from you, when I was made in secret, and woven in the depths of the earth.

16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; and in thy book all these things were written; which in continuance were formed, when as yet there was not one of them.

17 And how precious are your thoughts, O God! How great are their sums!

18 If I counted them, they would be more than the sand; When I wake up I’m still with you.

19 O God, you will surely slay the wicked; depart therefore from me, men of blood.

20 For they speak evil against you; and your enemies take your name in vain.

21 O LORD, do I not hate those who hate you, and am I not grieved because of those who rise up against you?

22 I hate them with perfect hatred; I consider them enemies.

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my thoughts.

24 And see if there is any evil way in me, and lead me in the eternal way.

The passage “you probed me” refers to the beginning of the prayer. Within the first 5 verses, David speaks strongly about all the confidence that God has in his servants. The king also reports that the Lord deeply and truly knows the essence of each one of them. Therefore, he has no way to hide anything.

On the other hand, David is also keen to emphasize that all this knowledge that Christ has about his children does not refer to a judgmental thought. Quite the contrary, Christ’s intention is to give consolation and support to those who strive and always seek to walk along a path of light and good.

Coming to verse 6, David makes reference to a “science” which, according to him, is so wonderful that he cannot even attain it. By saying these words, the King seeks to explain his deep relationship with Christ.

Thus, David still shows that God is always able to understand the attitudes of his children, so that he is compassionate towards them. Furthermore, the psalmist shows that the Lord acts with mercy in the face of the errors of his servants. In this way, it is possible to understand, once and for all, how Christ’s love for humans surpasses any kind of understanding of men.

The expression “flight from David” is addressed in verse 7, when the King comments on how difficult it is to get away from the presence of the Lord, treating it as a challenge. The psalmist tries to make it clear that he does not mean that this is what he wants. Quite the opposite.

What David means during this verse is that no one is able to slip past God. That is, the Father is always watching all your movements, attitudes, speeches and even thoughts. Thus, for David, the frequent presence of Christ, together with all his children, is a cause for celebration.

During verses 8 and 9, David refers to an ascent into heaven, where he says, “If I ascend into heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, you are there too. If you take the wings of the dawn, if you dwell on the ends of the sea.”

By uttering these words, the psalmist means that, no matter what problem you are going through, or even where you may be, whether it is dark or not, there is not even a place where God is not.

In this way, David sends the message that you can never feel left out, alone or abandoned, because Christ will always be with you. Therefore, never feel or allow yourself to be away from Him.

“For you possessed my kidneys; you covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise you, because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” By uttering these words, David demonstrates all his gratitude for the gift of life. In addition, he praises the blessing of women being able to still generate new lives.

This passage is still a kind of reflection on the whole mystery of life, in which David further extols the works of Christ.

By saying, “And how precious are your thoughts, O God,” David shows all the love and confidence he has in the Lord. He still goes on to emphasize the gratitude of the previous verses.

David still makes a kind of appeal relating to the thoughts of men. According to the psalmist, sometimes they are so intense that it is necessary to observe them carefully, without ever losing devotion to the Father. Thus, David makes a point of saying that God must always be in his thoughts, as this is a way of getting closer and getting in touch with the Creator.

In the passages from verses 19 to 21, David demonstrates all the desire he has that the world be totally free from evil. The psalmist has the desire to see a place, without arrogance, arrogance, envy, and everything that is bad.

In addition, he also has an immense desire for people to be more generous, charitable, and good in general. After all, according to the King, if they are the opposite, they will move further and further away from the Father.

Continuing the previous verses, David brings harsh words in excerpt 22, when he says: “I hate them with perfect hatred; I consider them enemies”. However, even though they are harsh words, when interpreted deeper, one can understand what the King meant by this.

Trying to look at David’s vision, one realizes that the psalmist sees all the actions of God’s enemies, and thus, he begins to repudiate them in an abominable way. That’s why so much hatred for the enemies, after all, they hate the Creator, and do totally contrary to everything He preaches.

Finally, the following words are observed in the last two verses: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my thoughts. And see if there is any evil path in me, and lead me through the eternal path “.

By uttering these wise words, David intends to ask that the Father is always beside his children. Illuminating their paths and guiding them wherever they go. The psalmist also wishes that God can purify the hearts of his servants, so that the essence of good can always reign in them.

Psalm 139 refers to another of the prayers written by King David, in which he demonstrates his faith and love in the Lord, and begs that He may always be by his side, illuminating his paths and delivering him from evil and injustice.
