Planet Uranus – Curiosities and characteristics – My Sky Map

The planet Uranus is one of the Gas Giants, the seventh furthest planet from the Sun and also the third largest in the solar system.

This immense blue color is little known by most people. In fact, many people don’t even imagine that it also has rings (as is the case with the planet Saturn and the planet Jupiter).

However, it holds many curiosities: not only in astronomy, but also in astrology and mythology!

Learn more about the planet Uranus and its fantastic characteristics.

What are the characteristics of the planet Uranus?

It is part of the gaseous planets, along with Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune. Its atmosphere is mainly composed of hydrogen and helium, but also water, methane and ammonia.

Therefore, it is considered an “ice giant”, as the low surface temperature means that it is basically made up of ice (mostly) and rocks. Therefore, the temperature on Uranus can reach an impressive -224°C, while the average is -195°C.

Another factor that contributes to the star being so cold is the distance from our king star: 2.87 billion km! In other words: the distance between its neighbor Saturn and the Sun is practically the same as the distance between these two planets.

What is the diameter of the planet Uranus?

The diameter of Uranus is 51,724 km, making it literally a giant. To give you an idea, it is about 67 times larger than our planet Earth in terms of size!

Why is Uranus blue?

Due to the composition of the planet’s atmosphere and the existence of methane. The red light falls on the star, which, after coming into contact with the methane, becomes visibly blue-green.

In fact, the same effect happens on its other neighbor, the planet Neptune.

How long is a day on Uranus?

The rotational movement of the planet Uranus is 17 hours and 14 seconds. This means that the day on Uranus is shorter than here on Earth, which for the busy people of our planet would be terrible to experience! LOL

Another curious fact about the planet is that this rotation movement is carried out with the planet at almost 90° in relation to its orbit. Therefore, Uranus rotates tilted (practically “lying down”), with its poles practically where the equatorial area of other planets would be.

Therefore, one of its poles is always facing the Sun.

How long is a year on Uranus?

It even rhymed! LOL
While the rotational movement is faster than ours, the translational movement is quite slow. As a result, it takes 84 years to complete one revolution around the Sun.

Rings and moons of Uranus

Like the other gas planets, Uranus also has rings. However, they are not visible here from Earth. Still, it does not have the same intensity and volume as those on Saturn, for example.

In total, there are 13 rings composed basically of dust and ice, in a complex system, but barely visible and with a diameter much smaller than those of Jupiter and Saturn.

They reflect little sunlight (about 5%) and have recently been better observed after analyzing thermal images.

Currently, there are 27 natural satellites discovered on Uranus, with the largest and most famous being Ariel, Umbriel, Titania and Oberon.

Planet Uranus and Mythology

In Greek mythology, Uranus was the god of the sky (or firmament), married to Gaia (the goddess of the earth).

They have many children together: such as all the Titans, Cyclops and the Hecatonchires. However, the god hated his children and forced Gaia to keep them inside her womb (or at the ends of the Earth, in the so-called Tartarus).

When this revolts her, she convinces Cronos, her most daring son, to defy his father. While Uranus sleeps, Kronos rips out his testicles with an indestructible scythe and takes his father’s place.

The curious thing is that, later, Cronos himself would also be dethroned by his own son, Zeus.
