Feng Shui practitioners use baguas as roadmaps or blueprints to identify specific sectors in homes, apartments, and offices. Understand what the bagua map is and see how to apply the bagua in your home.
How to apply the classic bagua
In Classic Feng Shui, the bagua is used after reading the compass to determine the direction of your home. You will need to find the center of your home.
Necessary materials
The first step in how to apply bagua is to get your house plan or layout. You can do the drawing yourself, trying to obey the proportions of each room.
It is also necessary:
- Paper;
- Pencil;
- Scale;
- Protractor.
How to apply bagua to the plant – Find the center of your home
You can find the center of your home, office or apartment using a simple geometric method. To do this, take your house plan or layout designed by you.
Make a straight diagonal line from one corner of the house to the other. Draw a second line from the other diagonally opposite corners. This will create an X.
The center of your house is where these two lines intersect, as shown in the image below.
Using the bagua based in the center of the house
The next part of the process of applying bagua is quick and easy. You must use the protractor to indicate the reading of the compass to the front of your house. To do this, draw a straight vertical line through the intersection of the diagonal lines.
Now, draw each sector of the bagua in your house. These will be the wedges dictated by the compass degrees for each of the eight compass directions. Use the following table to find the degree range for each direction.
Compass Degree Chart Compass Direction Degree Range North33.7° to 22.5°Northeast22.5° to 67.5°East67.5° to 112.5°Southeast112.5° to 157.5°South157.5° to 202.5°Southwest202.5° at 247.5°West247.5° to 292.5°Northeast292.5° to 337.5°
- To create each sector, use the table above to find the number of degrees for that direction. This range is the complete compass heading sector.
- You need to indicate this in your drawing. For example, if your house is 123.5° southeast, the range would be 112.5° to 157.5°.
- Mark this range using your compass. Make the beginning and end of this range. Make a mark to the left of 123.5° for the start degree and another mark to the right for the end degree.
- Draw a line from the mark on the left (112.5°) to the center point and a line from the mark on the right (157.5°).
- You have now created the Southeast (SE) section that indicates this sector in your home layout.
Refer to the compass degree chart above to do the same for the rest of your house plan.
Using the same Southeast example you did, find the 202.5° line on the protractor and mark it along the outside of the protractor.
Draw a line connecting this point with the center point. This is the second wedge of your house and indicates the southern region.
Proceed to the next degree of 247.5° and move through the degrees, pulling each wedge until the eight bagua wedges are complete.
You can indicate each direction with abbreviations, as in the figure below, where SE represents Southeast, S is South, SW is Southwest, W is West, NW is Northwest, N is North, NE is Northeast and E it’s the East.
Activating the Bagua elements in your home
Now that you have an accurate layout of your home bagua, you can start applying Feng Shui principles.
Some of the rooms in the house may fall into more than one sector.
Pay close attention to the corners of rooms with more than one sector and use the appropriate element in that corner just to avoid conflicting elements.
You can use the Feng Shui guidelines for each sector to decorate and select symbols and cures.
Successfully Applying Feng Shui to Your Home’s Bagua
Depending on the school of Feng Shui you practice, you can apply the bagua to your house floor plan.
Once you’ve identified where each sector is on your floor plan, you can start applying Feng Shui principles and practices to your home decor.
The bagua map you made of your home will show you how each area of your home corresponds to a specific aspect of your life. See in the image below.
You can use Feng Shui in every room in the house or just one room. In this example, we are going to do it for the whole house.
To understand how to apply bagua, take your house plan again or the layout you drew. Make a three-row, three-column grid over the entire house, like tic-tac-toe.
Name each square, starting from the top, from left to right, like this:
- Wealth / Fame and Recognition / Relationships and Romance
- Family / Health / Children
- Knowledge / career / travel and helpful people
Even if your house has an irregular shape, the bagua map should still be a grid.
What do you do with this Bagua map?
Take a look at the nine squares and determine which areas of your life need your focus right now. What are your goals?
It is not advisable to try to activate every corner of your home, as you will end up with too many objects cluttering up the space and competing for attention.
Instead, identify one or two aspects of your life that you would like to improve, and then take appropriate action in that space.
Below are some ideas for items you can use to improve specific areas of your life as they correspond to Bagua Feng Shui.
Wealth
Consider placing a live plant in this room as it brings nature outside into the home, creating rejuvenating, restful sleep and can activate the area to attract money.
Fame / Reputation
If appropriate, a red pillow or predominantly red paint can work well in this area.
If this room matches the master bedroom, red will not only be good for passion, but it will encourage fame and recognition in all areas of your life.
Romance / Relationships
Placing in this room any set of objects in two, such as paintings, candlesticks or any symbol of romance, can help decorate this room and amplify your intention for a strong relationship.
Family
You can use family photos in this room, as long as it’s not the master bedroom.
If the family area falls precisely in the master bedroom, prefer to place a live plant or light to activate this sector of your life.
Health
Keep this room organized so the chi can flow.
Children
Metal objects correspond to this area of the bagua. You might also consider white or purple flowers for fertility if that’s your goal.
Knowledge
Consider placing a live plant or something in green or black in this room to support your quest for knowledge.
Career
In this room, you can hang a Feng Shui crystal or prism on the door, so that the sun from a window can reflect on it. It will bring good luck and opportunities for your career.
Helpful People / Travel
This is a great space to store your luggage, or put away vacation souvenirs.
Remember, Feng Shui works due to a combination of action and intention. When applying these Feng Shui principles in your home, always keep goals in mind and use these tools to help align your home’s energy with those goals.
How to use the bagua mirror
Many people believe that the bagua mirror should be used in every room in the house. There is a lot of misinformation about how to use a bagua mirror in Feng Shui. Perhaps the most destructive advice is the suggestion to put a mirror over a toilet, but any advice to put a bagua mirror inside the house is wrong.
Bagua mirror is an external cure. The purpose of a bagua mirror is to deal with negative energies outside your home.
The best place to hang the bagua is just above the top beam of your home’s main entrance, outside.
