History of the Goddess Freya
Daughter of the giant Skadir and the sea god Njord, Freya is a Vanir Goddess and belongs to the group of representation to multiplication and fertility. Her twin brother Freyr, responsible for time, prosperity, peace, harmony and joy, complemented her actions, attracting prosperity and fertility to the land.
After a long period of wars and so much fighting together, Freya moves to Asgard and starts to live with the Gods of War, to the point of not being able to separate.
As men died in battle, their souls were taken to a hall provided by Odin, the ruler. There, Freya attended to the noble warriors who deserved recognition, in the face of their deeds. She shared the souls of these warriors with Odin: Half went to her palace, called Fólkvangr, while the rest left with Odin, to Valhalla.
Because of this connection, Freya is often mistakenly mistaken for Frigga, Odin’s wife. Although both have similar names and with the same meaning, they are not related, and the coexistence of the goddess of war with Odin is limited only to the organization of souls for the formation of the new army and the great friendship between the two.

Symbols of the Goddess Freya
Brisingamen’s necklace
It is a magical golden necklace called Brisingamen. The piece was produced by four blacksmith gnomes and acquired through one night of sex with each of them. The gem has the power to control the cycle of day and night and its brightness resembles the Sun.
According to legend, with the gift of making painful feelings disappear, this necklace was broken by the wrath of the Goddess when she learned that a giant had stolen Thor’s hammer and asked for her hand to return the God of Thunder’s weapon.
The war chariot and the lynxes
Freya’s chariot is guided by two felines, who with great speed and disguises advanced on the battlefield placing the goddess, always at the forefront of her army of valkyries.
For this reason, to this day, cats are associated with the spirit of the Goddess.
The wild boar mount Hildisvín
The wild boar has special associations within Norse mythology and Freya is no different.
As in every war, there are animals that facilitate and accelerate human locomotion. Freya, the Goddess of Battle, had a boar named Hildisvín who carried her around during battles. In addition, Freya carries the surname “Syr”, which means the word “sow”. As the Boar-Goddess, or Pig-Goddess, Freya is associated with forbidden sexual practices – especially sibling incest, represented by Freya and Freyr – linked to the celebrations of spring and renewal.
The boar was also the sacred animal of its brother, the god of fertility. Sacrificed and offered as an offering for the new year, the animal symbolizes the guarantee of prosperity for the next twelve months. From there, the custom of preparing and consuming pork meat at the turn of the year emerged.

A cloak made of falcon feathers allowed him to fly between the nine worlds and transform into a bird, fully seeing the territory of battles and attacking his prey.
