Who were the Pythonesses?

Legends say that Hera, a very jealous goddess, sent a python to closely watch Leto, mother of Apollo. He didn’t like the idea at all and killed the animal with his arrows, becoming known as Pythio. Therefore, all the women who worked in his temple were called Pythonesses.

Usually these women were chosen from the poorest parts of the population, as the Greeks believed that wealth impeded the vision of the future. To be a python, a woman needed to adhere to chastity, material detachment, and dress with discretion.

Once a year, in the spring, people from all over the country came to consult with the priestesses of Apollo. Leaders wanted advice on their war strategies, explorers sought guidance for their travels, and the general population wanted predictions primarily about health and money.

The Pythonesses were seated on high tripod chairs, facing an opening in the earth, from which a gas came out that put them in a trance. From that moment on, they were practically possessed and gave the long-desired answers.

Preparations for the event were tough and involved three days of fasting, bathing in the Castalian fountain, ruminating on bay leaves and various rituals. The women were in a trance for days, even after the experience was over.
