Within Greek mythology there are many fictional characters that are part of myths and legends. Among the most important are the gods of olympus — which the Greek people revered, for such devotion and attachment. Who are the gods of Olympus?

Formed by a group of 12 gods, they lived on top of Mount Olympus. An immense palace of crystal, very beautiful and that, for being so high, surpassed even the sky. The Olympian gods, also known as dodecateon, lived in a special condition due to their extensive physical and mental powers over humans. It is worth noting that Greek society was polytheistic, allowing itself to believe in more than one god.

Zeus – He was the main god, leader and ruler of Olympus. His power was manifested through lightning and storms, always indicating his dissatisfaction with some specific situation.

His supremacy was born after he managed to imprison Kronos in the abyss of darkness. But we cannot fail to mention the fact that he has a special attraction for women, a fact that made him have several affairs and children.

Poseidon – Also known as Neptune (to the Romans) he belongs to the same family as Zeus, being his older brother. He is the great god within the ocean, possessing great powers over the seas. When angered, he would be able to trigger tsunamis and earthquakes. Like his brother, the ruler of the group of Olympian gods, Poseidon was also very much a womanizer and had several affairs.

ivy – Wife of Zeus and great queen of Olympus. It is considered by many as the way to understand the union between men and women, seen as the symbol of marriage. Due to her husband’s womanizing feat, she began to have vengeful attitudes towards Zeus’ lovers.

Athena – Daughter of Zeus, she is considered the goddess of strategy, especially when it comes to dealing with wars – considered her specialty. And despite such beauty, she never married or was a fan of affairs. Today, in Greek territory, there is the city of Athens – named like that, in order to honor the goddess.

Aphrodite – It was considered a symbol of love. She was considered the most beautiful of the goddesses, causing great interest from the other Olympian gods. To avoid problems, Zeus forced her to marry Hephaestus – considered the ugliest of the gods.

Apollo – God of light and melodies. He was one of the most beautiful gods, but also quite vain. That’s how he incarnated himself as the sun, with the aim of warding off human eyes from his face.

Ares – Son of Zeus and Hera, Ares was the god of war. He took pleasure in seeing the suffering of others and caused negative feelings in humans who were close to him.

Hephaestus – Considered the ugliest of the Olympian gods. His mother, Hera, tried to throw him out of the crystal palace. He was married to Aphrodite and specialized in architecture. He forged several important items within Greek mythology such as the thunderbolt of Zeus (his father) and the Trident of Poseidon.

Dionysus – He was the god of parties, revelry and wine. His physical appearance was the most similar to mortals among all the Olympian gods. In his honor, the Greeks held wine parties and bacchanals.

Artemis – Goddess of hunting and wildlife. She renounced men to practice her activities, swearing to be an eternal virgin. She had a very beautiful bow and arrow made of silver.

Hermes – Son of Zeus in one of his cases, Hermes was considered the messenger of the gods. He also protected travelers and traders from the dangers posed by other beings in bad faith.

Demeter – Finally, the goddess Demeter was considered a symbol of agriculture. She had several affairs and children. She protected crops, plants, flowers and the seasons.
