Hermeticism: What is it and what is its origin? 🤔

Hermeticism is a mystical, philosophical and religious movement linked to ancient writings that are attributed to a somewhat mysterious personality called Hermes Trismegistus.

It is believed to have originated in Egypt during the time of Hellenistic and Roman occupation. Despite the resistance of the Egyptians, it was impossible not to establish a religious syncretism among them. Thus, characteristics of the Greek god Hermes were seen in the Egyptian god Thoth, as well as the opposite.

Thoth was the god of wisdom, the art of hieroglyphics, the creator of the Book of the Dead and communicated with the gods. Hermes, on the other hand, was also associated as a messenger of the gods and a bearer of news.

Thus, the union of Thoth with Hermes resulted in the god/personality/mage Hermes Trismegistus, which means “thrice great”.

Hermes is believed to have lived among men, inspiring many religious and philosophical traditions. It is even speculated that he taught Moses and even Pythagoras. There are those who believe and even identify Hermes as Moses.

One thing is certain, this mythological figure may not even have existed, but the hermetic force contributed a lot to the formation of several theories.

The intelligence and acumen attributed to Hermes could not be contained, but neither could it be revealed so easily. Therefore, he wrote numerous texts that are divided into two types: Technical Hermetic and Philosophical Hermetic.

Both types are not easy to read, containing countless enigmas and secrets that only an initiate would know how to understand. In fact, it is so complex for untrained eyes that hermetic has become an adjective for something completely sealed, sealed or difficult to understand.

To facilitate understanding, here is a text that compiles a lot of information about the Hermetica.

What does Hermeticism believe?

  • Believes that humanity is on a spiritual path to return to a state of unity with the divine;
  • It maintains that whoever wants to reach the divine must aspire to the divine; Spiritual growth cannot be achieved without human effort
  • He believes in eclecticism and therefore draws material from sources that span the entire western esoteric tradition
  • It accepts polytheism, but is ultimately monotheistic, since the various divine manifestations would have a single origin;
  • Believes that the divine is both part of being (immanent) and something that is transcendent;
  • It holds that the Universe is divine and basically good;
  • It teaches that when one is looking for the divine, one must understand and study nature;
  • Stimulates spiritual curiosity;
  • Understands that human beings can access the Subtle Realms through techniques and deep desire; to this end it encompasses theurgy, meditation, rituals and other spiritual and magical practices;
  • It seeks to contribute to a more poetic worldview than abstaining from pleasures and material comfort (asceticism).

So mysterious and yet so influential. Because?

As a Gnostic tradition, Hermeticism is a school of ideas and systems that focuses on the pursuit of Gnosis. For those who don’t know, Gnosis is a religious movement that believes that salvation can be obtained through a special form of secret knowledge.

Contrary to most religions, especially Christian, Hermetics do not believe in just one holder of all truth and power. The spiritual and divine experience is in each of us. However, one must know how and when to awaken this power.

They took the pursuit of mystical experience into their own hands and developed a way of thinking about the world that helped them communicate and directly experience what they call a more visionary reality.

hermetic literature

Currently we find several types of books and articles related to Hermeticism. However, not everything is really in line with what is preached. After all, as we have already stated, the materials were not so literal and much was lost in translation and interpretation.

That is, they were not easy to understand because of their symbolism. But how to understand? The Hermetics strongly believe in the oral tradition, in which teachings are passed on in spoken form to their disciples.

Anyway, we have great and traditional works that cross time and remain arousing the curiosity of many (including mine!):

  • Kybalion
  • Corpus Hermeticum
  • emerald board

Kybalion

Kybalion (1908), from The Three Initiates (pseudonym of William Walker Atkinson) may have originated the movement we know as “the law of attraction”.

In this classic of Hermetic philosophy, we find the condensation of the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus. Furthermore, it shows clearly and very carefully in the interpretation of the seven Hermetic principles:

  • mentalism
  • Correspondence
  • Vibration
  • Polarity
  • Rhythm
  • Cause and effect
  • Genre

Corpus Hermeticum

This is a treatise of several texts attributed to Hermes Trismegistus himself, drawn up between 100 and 200 AD in the region of Egypt that was dominated by the Romans.

Interesting fact is that part of the texts has been lost and over the centuries has been found in different parts of the world. Of fundamental importance to the occult arts, this book also deals with the Emerald Tablet.

This small and mysterious text also attributed to Hermes Trismegistus seems to be a compilation of many religions, from different times. This tablet contains the introduction to alchemy in 16 verses.
