Reading coffee grounds started in the Balkans and Turkey, one of the favorite pastimes is drinking Turkish coffee, followed by seeing your luck from the leftover coffee grounds in the cup, but how does it work? coffee grounds reading? Turkish coffee readings fall under the category of Caffeomancy the divination methods for interpreting patterns in tea leaves, coffee grounds or wine sediments.
At first, the patterns may seem chaotic and random, but with practice, a little intuition, and a little imagination, the patterns in the cup will take shape allowing the reader to interpret them.
1. Preparation for reading the coffee grounds
At coffee grounds readings turkish are made by professional diviners or among friends who have some experience with it, but it is not customary to read your own cup. For example, I a grandmother who gives readings to her friends pass on the ability to read Turkish coffee and pass it on from generation to generation.
When a read is requested, the reader will do the following:
- • It will prepare a strong and velvety Turkish coffee
- • Will serve coffee in small cups with a solid white inside
- • Ask the person drinking the coffee to drink the coffee with intent, that is, to think about your questions as you drink. In some countries, a person will have to drink the coffee in a certain number of sips, usually 1, 3 or 5
- • When they finish drinking, they will turn the cup upside down on the saucer
- • Then ask them to pick up the cup and saucer upside down and while thinking about their intention, rotate the cup and saucer 3 times clockwise or counterclockwise, releasing the sediment inside.
- • Once they are done turning, ask them to put the saucer and cup on the table. As the sediment flows from the cup onto the saucer, the fortune teller will ask the person who drank the coffee to place a ring or coin on top of the cup if the intention is love or wealth.
2. How to get started
To take a Turkish coffee reading, you’ll need intuition, charismatic storytelling, and a decent knowledge of symbols. While the coffee is running down the cup, use the 5-10 minutes to talk to the person who drank it. It’s okay to ask them details about their intentions and why they feel anxious about the future in coffee grounds reading.
In some countries, diviners will read both the cup and the saucer. After about 5-10 minutes, the cup will be ready to be read. The soothsayer will only catch the cup trying to separate it from the saucer
If the cup and saucer do not immediately separate because of suction, the cup is considered not to be read. This is called the “Prophet’s Cup” and is very auspicious, favoring the drinker’s intention.
If most of the coffee sediment ran from the cup to the saucer, the fortune teller should comment that “worries are leaving” the person who drank the coffee.
A perfect little raised mound on the saucer suggests that “the money will come soon”.
In some countries, if the cup leaves a perfect circle outlining the edge of the saucer, it means that the intention will come true, while a broken circle suggests otherwise. There are several ways to interpret the cup. The most common are:
- • Past, present and future readings where the bottom of the cup represents the past, the middle of the cup shows the present situation, while the area around the rim symbolizes the future
- • Five-section readings divide the cup into five general sections that have representative meaning. If you turn the cup so that the cup’s handle is pointing towards you, the fortune teller, then
- • The area around the handle represents love and relationships
- • On the other side of the cup handle is the section related to money and wealth
- • The left side of the handle symbolizes the current situation of the person who drank the coffee
- • The right section of the identifier predicts future events
- • The bottom of the cup tells you things related to home and family
3. Symbols
when doing the coffee grounds reading in someone’s cup, choose one of the methods described in the previous step. Pay special attention to larger shapes as they carry more weight than smaller ones. There are some typical patterns that occur in cups and some typical meanings.
Vertical lines are your goals in life. The longer and darker the line, the better the result. If the line reaches the rim of the cup, it is considered auspicious for that purpose. All straight lines or paths show a clear plan with specific goals, while wavy or broken lines signify uncertainty.
A group of black dots means you can get money soon. Some also interpret these points as messages that you will soon receive.
Change is coming to your life
overall success
comfort and peace
Crossroads, decision options or help from a friend
Question you want answered, concern. If the question mark has a dot, your question will be answered and if it doesn’t, the uncertainty will remain,
danger, excitement
good luck will come
4. Letters and numbers
Now, remember that symbology can vary greatly between cultures. The previous step described some very common meanings, but from this step onwards, you may want to look for symbolic meanings specific to your culture and region. Mainly, not all cultures consider the same numbers or letters auspicious. Likewise, certain animals and objects have different meanings in different cultures.
Numbers
The numbers can have a numerical or symbolic meaning, depending on the cup’s general story and the reader’s interpretation. If the meaning is numerical, it means that an event will happen in a certain number of days, weeks, months, or that one has or will get a certain amount of something.
Some of the symbolic meanings of numbers are:
- • 1: Beginning of something new
- • 2: Choice or indecision between two things
- • 3: Meeting
- • 4: Jealousy, misfortune
- • 5: Success
- • 6: sex
- • 7: new love
- • 8: Double luck
- • 9: An offer
- . 0: things repeating themselves, going around in circles
Letters
Letters, like numbers, can have literal or symbolic meaning. Since alphabets are really a regional and cultural thing, I’ll stick to Roman symbols. Letters, like numbers, can be interpreted literally. In the literal case, the letter symbolizes a name, place, or object beginning with that letter. This is interpreted by the general history of the cup or information provided by the person who drank the coffee.
Some typical symbolic meanings of letters are:
- • A: Beginning of something new
- • B: Conflict
- • C: Children and protection
- • D: House
- • E: Unexpected news, good or bad
- • F: New relationship, friendship
- • G: Joy
- • H: Pride, arrogance
- • I: Surprise
- • J: love
- • K: Branching, expanding
- • L: Lies
- • M: Healing or family
- • N: Rejection
- • O: Success, marriage
- • Q: Family expansion, pregnancy
- • R: rest, relief
- • S: Happiness
- • T: Punctuality, opportunity or lack of
- • U: Desire for material things
- • V: Victory
- • X: crossroads or target
- • Z: Finalization
5. Other symbols
The interpretation of symbols is very specific to regions and cultures. I would suggest looking for symbology that is specific to your culture, as different objects and animals have different meanings in different countries. A symbol or totem considered auspicious in one region may not be in another.
