The relationship of Catholic saints in Umbanda is directly linked to the History of Brazil. In the colonial period, thousands of Africans were brutally removed from their continent and brought to the New World. Along with them came their knowledge, their culture and also their religious beliefs.
The colonizers, in addition to enslaving Africans, also tried to impose their religion on them and, in an effort to maintain their faith, blacks began to pretend that they were worshiping Christian saints while worshiping their Orixás.
