Orixás and Catholic Saints in Umbanda – A matter of survival

The relationship of Catholic saints in Umbanda is directly linked to the History of Brazil. In the colonial period, thousands of Africans were brutally removed from their continent and brought to the New World. Along with them came their knowledge, their culture and also their religious beliefs.

The colonizers, in addition to enslaving Africans, also tried to impose their religion on them and, in an effort to maintain their faith, blacks began to pretend that they were worshiping Christian saints while worshiping their Orixás. With this, religious syncretism emerged, where each Catholic saint started to make reference to an African deity.

It is important to note that the relationship between these entities usually varies greatly according to the state and region of the country. For this reason, it is very common for a Catholic saint in Umbanda to be represented by several different orixás in each place.
