1. Psalm of God’s Righteousness

Psalm 94

1 O Lord God, to whom vengeance belongs, O God, to whom vengeance belongs, show yourself resplendent!

2 Exalt yourself, you who are judge of the earth; pays the proud.

3 How long will the wicked, O Lord, how long will the wicked leap for joy?

4 How long will all the workers of iniquity utter and say harsh things, and boast?

5 They break your people to pieces, O LORD, and afflict your inheritance.

6 They kill the widow and the foreigner and the orphan they kill.

7 And they say, The Lord shall not see him; nor will the God of Jacob look to this.

8 Heed, ye brutish among the people; and you fools, when will you be wise?

9 He who made the ear, will he not hear? And what formed the eye, will you not see?

10 Will he who accuses the nations not punish? And what gives a man knowledge, will he not know?

11 The Lord knows the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.

12 Blessed is the man whom you rebuke, O Lord, and whom you teach from your law,

13 to give him rest from evil days, until the pit is dug for the wicked.

14 For the LORD will not reject his people, nor forsake his inheritance.

15 But judgment will return to righteousness, and all the upright in heart will follow it.

16 Who will be for me against evildoers? Who will stand by me against those who work iniquity?

17 If the Lord had not been to my help, my soul would already dwell in the place of silence.

18 When I said: My foot falter; Your lovingkindness, O Lord, sustained me.

19 When my cares increased within me, your comforts refreshed my soul.

20 Can the throne of iniquity be associated with you, who wreaks evil on the pretext of a law?

21 They rush against the life of the righteous and condemn innocent blood.

22 But the Lord was my high retreat; and my God the rock where I took refuge.

23 And he will bring their own iniquity back on them; and he will destroy them in his own malice; the Lord our God will destroy them.

2. Psalm of justice

Psalm 10

1 O Lord God, why do you stay so far away? Why do you hide in times of distress?

2 The wicked are proud and persecute the poor; let them fall into their own traps!

3 The wicked speak proudly of their desires. People who exploit others despise the Lord and blaspheme Him.

4 The evil man cares not for God; because of his pride he thinks like this: “For me, God doesn’t matter.”

5 Everything this man does works. He cannot understand God’s judgments and mocks his enemies.

6 He thinks like this: “I will never fail; I will never have difficulties.”

7 His mouth is full of curses, lies, and threats. He only speaks of misfortunes and evils.

8 He hides near villages; he waits there and kills innocent people.

9 Like a lion, he waits in his hiding place and spies on those who cannot defend themselves. He lies in wait, waiting for those who are pursued; then he catches the victims in the trap and drags them away.

10 They are crushed and fall, defeated by brute force.

11 This evil man thinks like this: “God doesn’t care; he has closed his eyes and never sees anything!”

12 Come, O Lord God, and punish these wicked people! Do not forget those who are being persecuted!

13 How can an evil person despise God and think that God will not punish him?

14 But you, O God, see and perceive suffering and sorrow and are always ready to help. Those who cannot defend themselves trust you; you have always helped the needy.

15 Lord, end the power of the wicked and the wicked. Punish them for their iniquities until they do them no more.

16 The Lord is King forever; the heathen will be driven out of his land.

17 O Lord God, you will hear the prayers of those who are persecuted and give them courage.

18 You will hear the cries of the oppressed and the needy, and you will judge in their favor so that human beings, who are mortal, will never again spread terror.

3. Psalm of divine justice

Psalm 82

1 God is in the congregation of the mighty; he judges among the gods.

2 How long will you judge unjustly, and accept the people of the wicked? (Saddle.)

3 Give justice to the poor and the fatherless; justify the afflicted and the needy.

4 Deliver the poor and needy; take them out of the hands of the wicked.

5 They neither know nor understand; they walk in darkness; all the foundations of the earth waver.

6 I said: You are gods, and all of you are sons of the Most High.

7 Yet you will die like men, and you will fall like any of the princes.

8 Arise, O God, judge the earth, for you possess all the nations.

4. Psalm for lawsuits in justice

Psalm 35

1 Strive, O Lord, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight me.

2 Take the shield and the buckler, and arise to my help.

3 Take away the spear and the javelin against those who persecute me. Tell my soul: I am your salvation.

4 Let those who seek my life be ashamed and confounded; turn back and let those who intend evil against me be put to shame.

5 Be like a mill before the wind, and the angel of the Lord make you flee.

6 Let their way be dark and slippery, and let the angel of the Lord pursue them.

7 For without cause they set a snare for me secretly; without reason they dug a grave for my life.

8 Let destruction come upon them unexpectedly, and the snare which they have hidden bind them; let them fall into that same destruction.

9 Then my soul will rejoice in the Lord; will rejoice in your salvation.

10 All my bones shall say, O Lord, who is like you, who deliver the weak from him who is stronger than he? Yes, the poor and the needy, from the one who robs him.

11 Malicious witnesses arise; they question me about things I don’t know.

12 They turn evil into good, causing my soul to mourn.

13 But as for me, when they were sick, I put on a hair shirt, humbled myself with fasting, and prayed with my head on my breast.

14 I behaved as I would for my friend or my brother; I was bent over and wailing, as if weeping for his mother.

15 But when I stumbled, they were glad and gathered together; they gathered against me, wretched men whom I did not know; they defamed me without ceasing.

16 Like mocking hypocrites at feasts, they gnashed their teeth against me.

17 O Lord, how long wilt thou contemplate this? Deliver me from your violence; save my life from the lions!

18 Then I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among a great many people I will praise you.

19 Let not those who are my enemies without reason rejoice over me, nor let those who hate me without cause wink over me.

20 For they have not spoken of peace, but they devise deceitful words against the quiet of the earth.

21 They have opened their mouth at me, and say, Ah! Oh! our eyes have seen it.

22 You, Lord, have seen him, do not be silent; Lord, do not depart from me.

23 Wake up and awake to my judgment, to my cause, my God and my Lord.

24 Justify me according to your righteousness, O Lord my God, and let them not rejoice over me.

25 Do not say in your heart, Hey! our wish was fulfilled! Do not say: We have devoured it.

26 Let them be ashamed and confounded together who rejoice in my evil; let those who exalt themselves against me be clothed with shame and confusion.

27 Let those who desire my justification be glad, and let them say my justification, and say continually, May the Lord be magnified, who delights in the prosperity of his servant.

28 Then my tongue will speak of your righteousness and of your praise all day long.

5. Psalm to ask for justice

Psalm 43

1 Give me justice, O God! Defend my cause against unfaithful people! Deliver me from the fraudulent and criminal man!

2 For you, O God, are my strength. Why did you reject me? Why must I wander and mourn, oppressed by the enemy?

3 Send your light and your truth: may they guide me and lead me to your holy mountain and to your dwelling place!

4 Then I will come to the altar of God, to the God of my joyful joy; I will praise you with the harp, O God, my God.

5 Why are you cast down, O my soul? Why do you grieve so much within me? deposit all your confidence in God! For I will yet praise him; He is my salvation and my God!
