Understand sleep paralysis in the spiritist view – Blog

When looking for a scientific explanation about sleep paralysis, we find that this episode is just an event that everyone can experience during the REM – Rapid Eye Movement (rapid eye movement) phase of sleep. Thus, this paralysis is characterized by an inability to move, to see and sensations such as suffocation and weight on the body. But if we look at it from the other side, we can find a different line of interpretations of these episodes, which is the sleep paralysis in the spiritist view.

What is sleep paralysis in the spiritist view

Before we really clarify what sleep paralysis is in the spiritist view, it is worth reinforcing some important conditions and definitions of what happens in these episodes:

  • Sleep paralysis cannot be controlled or stopped;
  • Most people experiencing this are young adults aged 25 to 35;
  • 90% of the time you experience sleep paralysis is upon awakening;
  • People who experience this episode are not under the influence of drugs or mental illness;

The highlighted items serve to show that the physiological and classic definition for sleep paralysis can be considered insufficient when we talk about the scientific side. After all, it is such a complex and uncontrollable mechanism.

But all this complexity of sleep paralysis in the spiritist view can be explained essentially through two principles: “The dual nature of the human being” and “Spirits are everywhere”.

“The dual nature of the human being” says that during the chronological and biological evolution, the human being can begin to foresee experiences that prepare him to live an existence between the two spiritual planes. In short, the episodes of sleep paralysis would be a kind of training for the spirit that is incarnated with the body.

The principle “spirits are everywhere” comes to explain situations that happen during sleep paralysis, such as feeling the presence of someone or hearing voices and sounds. This is because in fact spirits are everywhere and they can provide positive or negative sensations and experiences.

Once you understand these two principles, it is possible to make some observations that further reinforce the spirituality involved in these episodes. It also helps to understand how the sleep paralysis in the spiritist view can shed a lot of light on the process.

The first finding is that many agnostic or non-believers who experience sleep paralysis, because they feel so much fear and anguish, unconsciously ask for God’s help or protection at this time.

The second is that as in sleep paralysis you are between sleep and awakening, it is the moment when the disembodied spirit interacts with the incarnated body. Thus, the episode can be considered an experience of “incomplete unfolding”, when our spirit partially disincarnates.

The third proves that the sensations of suffocation or hearing voices are in no way related to the presence of a spiritual obsession. Therefore, the occurrence of sleep paralysis is not an obsessive process. This is because in the spiritist view, this episode would be our own soul coming out of us and not another soul wanting to occupy our body.
