Ticê & Anhangá – Kings of the Underworld

Ticê was also very marked in the history of Tupi-Guarani mythology for having become the wife of the God of the submento, Anhangá. This makes her the First Lady of the Underworld. Of course, a woman as powerful as Ticê should never be remembered just for her relationship status, and that’s not how it happened. What made their story one of the best known among the gods was the way they fell in love.

Anhangá was also very powerful, he was in charge of punishing bad and cruel people. In addition, he was the protector of the flora and arch enemy of Tupã, a mighty God. As Anhangá had to punish all those who mistreat women, pregnant females, etc., he had a peculiar way of doing it. According to the stories, anyone who looked into his eyes was struck by a madness that would be capable of ending the joy of life, leading the person to death.

In the midst of all this, Ticê found Anhangá and used her powers to deceive him. That is, she was not struck by the madness and death of the God of the Underworld. This caused, for a brief moment, the two of them to stop and look each other deeply eye to eye. The result of this exchange of glances was a fulminating passion, which ended in marriage. After that, the two went on to rule the underworld together.
