The June Saints

Saint Anthony – The Matchmaker Saint

Baptized as Fernando however, popularly known as Santo Antônio. Born in Lisbon, around 1195.

As a young man, he entered the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora and began religious training. Soon after, he went to study at the Monastery of Santa Cruz in Coimbra, where he spent around 10 years. There, he was ordained to be a priest because he had great preaching power.

He died on June 13, 1231, in Italy. Throughout his life, Saint Anthony performed some miracles during his preaching in squares and churches.

Saint Anthony’s day is celebrated on June 13, it is celebrated along with the well-known June parties here in Brazil and Portugal. Therefore, he is considered one of the santos juninos.

But why Saint Matchmaker?

They say that Saint Anthony is considered the matchmaker saint because of one of his miracles performed. After a young woman prayed in front of her image to get money for the wedding, Santo Antonio gave you a note telling her to go to a merchant and the merchant gave her 400 pesos.

According to him, it was a promise he had made to Santo Antônio and would be paying. In addition, the date that is celebrated on Valentine’s Day is the day before Saint Anthony’s Day. That is, people use it to make sympathy about relationships.

Saint John – Protector of the Married and Sick

Saint John was the one who baptized Jesus, whose cousin he was. Born in Aim Karim, his mission as an adult baptized all who felt sorry for their sins. Therefore, he is also known as Saint John the Baptist.

It is said that he was the one who announced the arrival of the Messiah and who identified that Jesus was sent from God. His death was very sad, Saint John was beheaded and at the behest of Herod.

June 24th is considered Saint John’s day because it is the day of his birth. In the same month that Saint John’s Day is celebrated, the other two santos juninos. However, there are those who say that São João is the main one of the three and that the origin of the name festa junina comes from the name of the saint.

San Pedro – Saint of the fishermen

Born in Bethsaida, Peter was a fisherman and worked with his brother on the Sea of ​​Galilee – a freshwater lake formed by the Jordan River. Considered protector of fishermen.

He was one of the first disciples of Jesus, having become the leader of the 12 apostles. It was only natural that, after Jesus’ death, resurrection and ascension, he would assume the coordination of the work. Therefore, he was considered the first Pope in history.

Peter died crucified. When he learned that he would be crucified, Peter chose to be turned upside down, considering himself unworthy to die like Jesus. Therefore, June 29th is considered Saint Peter’s day, along with the other three saints, he complements the trio of santos juninos.
