Ninth rune of the Ancient Futhark, the Hagalaz (or Hagal) rune opens the second Aett, a set commanded by the gods Heimdall and Mordgud and which governs emotional affairs.

The name “Hagalaz” means “stone” or “hail” and therefore the meaning of this rune is linked to the destructive power of nature.

The position of the rune Hagalaz in the Aett and its symmetrical shape are essential to understand its characteristics and its meaning: its position in ninth place in the Norse alphabet makes this rune symbolize the nine worlds of the Tree of Life, Yggdrasil. Also, the number nine appears in the gestation period of a baby in its mother’s womb and in the power of three times three, used in magical rituals.

Its shape deserves attention, as two designs are accepted: the first, in the ancient alphabet, similar to an H, symbolizes the heavens and the earth, united by a storm or a hailstorm.

The second shape, a snowflake, is present in later alphabets and contains within it the basis for all other runes; hence Hagalaz is called the Mother Rune.

The two shapes are symmetrical, which means that this rune does not accept an inverted position interpretation, always having the same appearance.
