Psalm 28: to calm the spirit and give thanks to the Lord

“To thee will I cry for calm, O Lord; do not be silent to me; may it not happen, if you are silent towards me, that I become like those who go down into the abyss; Hear the voice of my supplications, calm me when I lift up my hands to your holy oracle; Do not drag me away with the wicked and with those who work iniquity, who speak peace to their neighbor, but have evil in their hearts; Blessed be the Lord, for he has heard the voice of my supplications; The LORD is my strength and my shield, the LORD is the strength of his people and the saving strength of his anointed; Save your people, and bless your inheritance; soothe them and exalt them forever.”

Understanding Psalm 28: How It Helps You to Be Calm in Times of Need

Right at the beginning of the psalm God is invoked, called to be heard and come to calm our anxieties and concerns. Almost always God answers us in silence, but sometimes he calms us in the midst of an unanswered silence.

When we don’t elaborate on this situation, we get scared, that’s why “those who have already descended into the abyss” are mentioned. What is expected of this psalm to calm is that God protect us from the evil of those with bad feelings, cited as wicked (people against and who do not respect any kind of religion).

Another teaching contained in this calming psalm is that in addition to praying for ourselves, we can always pray for those around us: “Save your people and bless your inheritance; soothe them and exalt them forever.”
