The baptismal name of the Saint was Fernando Antônio de Bulhões.

He was from a noble and wealthy family, and he went to the monastery against the family’s wishes.

Initially Santo Antônio was ordained an Augustinian priest and only later, after meeting a group of Franciscan friars in Coimbra, did he become Frei Antônio and moved to the monastery of São Francisco de Assis.

Saint Anthony is known as the holy miracle worker, protector of marriages, lost things and the poor.

According to the stories, he performed many miracles in life. During his great preaching in squares and churches, many sick people were healed.

After his passing, the miracles continued, and eleven months after his death he was beatified and canonized by Pope Gregory IX. The canonization ceremony took place on May 30, 1232 in the cathedral of Spoleto.

An interesting fact is that when the Saint’s body was exhumed, his tongue was intact.

In 1934 the saint was declared patron saint of Portugal, and in 1946 Pope Pius XII proclaimed him Doctor of the Church.
