The history of São Bento

The parents of São Bento sent him to the Eternal City to study liberal sciences. However, after growing up he began to study philosophy in Rome. After some time, he met a hermit and this gentleman gave him a monk’s habit and taught him all about the hermit’s life.

São Bento accompanied him to a cave on Mount Subíaco and remained there for 3 years in prayers and studies and the only one who visited him was the hermit, only to take food. After that, he went on to inspire young people to follow suit.

Shortly after the age of 40, he built the famous monastery of Monte Cassino, which is still considered the driving force of Benedictine life in all times. The saint died in 547, aged 67, and was recognized by the Church as the patron saint of Europe.

Because of this, the prayer of Saint Benedict and his medal are very important symbols of faith and love, especially for all those who are devotees of the saint and for the Catholic Church. The medal has undergone several changes over the centuries, but since 1942 there is an official version that has been recognized by Pope Clement XIV as a symbol of worship and devotion.
