Oxum, seeing all that, also wanted to learn to see the future, but his father explained that Ifá had the necessary gift to read and interpret the cowries correctly, just like Exú. It was then that the Orixá decided to ask Exú himself to teach how to read the cowries. Of course the Orisha refused.

Saddened by the refusal, the Orisha went to the forest and found the witches Yámi Oroxangá who were willing to teach the Orisha the gift of interpreting cowries. However, the witches really wanted to play a trick on Exú.

In the end, Oxum was instructed to make a spell along with an offering to the Yámi. When he got close to Exú with his hands full of dust, Oxum asked the Orisha to guess what he had in his hands and blew the dust in her face. The Orisha was temporarily blinded and needed help to guide himself.

Oxum told his father what he had done and Ifá was amazed by the Orisha’s courage and dexterity. It was then that he decided to present her with the “hand of game”, making her regent of the Oracle, as well as Exú.

When asked about the reason for all that, the Orisha told her father that she did it out of love for him!

Who is Oxum in the Catholic Church?

The Orisha Oxum is syncretized in the Catholic Church by Our Lady of Aparecida, Santa considered patron saint of Brazil.
