Meaning of Goddess Frigga

The name fridge means “the one who loves”, has Old Norse origin and can also be written in the following ways: Frigg, Frige, Frija, Fricka. Frigga is the Goddess of Norse mythology who symbolizes the fertility of the earth, love and union.

She is also known to be the mother goddess of the Aesir dynasty, thus being considered the protector of families, mothers, housewives and tribes.

Despite being very confused with the Goddess Freya, Frigga has no connection with the queen of the Valkyries.

Story of the Goddess Frigga and her family

Frigga was the companion of Odin, the father of them all, and together they took care of their offspring: Baldr, Hode and Hermod, their legitimate children. Frigga was also responsible for raising her stepsons Thor, Tyr, Bragi, Vali and Vidar.

Some stories say that Frigga and Odin had an open relationship and that she even had the habit of getting involved with her brothers-in-law, Vile and Ve. This fact did not prevent her from being recognized as the protector of women and marriages.

Odin, the father of all

Considered by the Vikings to be the creator of the Universe, Odin was the chief of the warrior gods, called Aesir. Among his powers, we can highlight clairvoyance, a fact that also associates him with the Vanir group.

There is a legend that Odin traded one of his eyes for the power to see the past, predict the future and change the destiny of men. He is considered the greatest master of sorcery, in addition to having created the runes, an alphabet used in Scandinavia with magical powers.

The name Odin meant the furious and one of his roles was to welcome dead fighters into Valhalla, the afterlife home of heroes rescued by the Valkyries.

Thor, the god of thunder

Son of the Goddess Frigga and Odin, Thor is one of the most famous and powerful gods in Viking culture. Along with a hammer that only he could wield, Thor fought the forces of evil to prevent the end of the world. The hammer, called ‘Mjolnir’, became a symbol of strength and was regarded as an amulet by the Vikings.

Thor’s main enemy was Jormungand, the serpent daughter of Loki. They dueled a few times, and the last one would have been at Ragnarök, events that caused the end of the world.

Balder is the son of Odin and Frigga, therefore brother of Thor. Considered the purest and most beautiful of the Norse gods, he is that type who loved everything and everyone, and who was also loved by everyone, with the exception of Loki, who envied his popularity.

Loki was the son of the frost giants, but was adopted by Odin and Frigga, due to his qualities and good manners. The adopted son gained prestige among the other gods, but it was not enough for him to stop creating problems.

After slaying the giantess Angerboda and eating her heart, Loki fed the evil forces within her heart and took shelter in the undergrowth. There, he was responsible for creating three monsters: Fenrir, the wolf; Jormungand, the serpent and Hel, the goddess of death.

Powers of the Goddess Frigga

Among Frigga’s various powers, clairvoyance stood out, which predicts things that have yet to happen. However, because they were not exact interpretations or that other people could confirm them, she kept them to herself. The deity also transformed into several birds.

The mother goddess was able to maintain a connection between individuals who were friends, being able to transfer the pain that one felt to the other. According to legends, Frigga had 20 handmaidens and the main ones were:

Hlín, goddess of protection. She was responsible for defending humans from harm when asked by Frigga. Furthermore, this servant protected men and even consoled mortals who suffered some kind of punishment;

Fulla, Frigga’s confidant. Frigga’s sister, she was responsible for taking care of her shoes and her magic box;

Gna, goddess of messengers. She roamed the world on horseback and was responsible for Frigga’s affairs across the planet.

However, some theories claim that these three goddesses were just manifestations of Frigga herself at different times.
